      Introduction

      Brigitte Bardot is every man's dream.

      At least, that's how she was marketed when she burst onto the celebrity scene back in the 1950s.

      From the roles she was played in early films such as ‘…And God Created Women’ to the publicity photographs of the jejune Bardot in a bikini at the Cannes film festival and the images of her subsequently plastered across magazines throughout the world, she was idealised as sensual woman incarnate.

      However, it was a new kind of woman, one in opposition to the prevailing notions of femininity in the 1950s – opposed to domesticity, subordination, decorum. Here was a woman who lived by her passions, who could be seen to be living by those passions. To love who she wanted. To leave when she wanted. Her commitment to being true to herself, to doing what she wanted, made her reviled and desired in almost equal measure.

      While it would be wrong to say that Bardot did not care at all for how she was perceived, it is certainly the case that she did not feel at all ashamed for following her own idiosyncratic path - whether that was in the movies she chose to star in, her sudden retirement from the silver screen to concentrate on animal rights, or the political viewpoints she became increasingly happy to share with the media.

      And the same goes for her romantic life too.

      Brigitte Bardot loves passionately. And if that love fades, she moves on. She is a woman who knows her own heart – and listens to it.

      Over her long life she has had many amours, including four marriages and multiple affairs, both fleeting and more long-lasting. From directors and actors, to musicians and politicians, she has loved fiercely, and been loved back. Not all her relationships have ended well, but they have, by and large, ended on her terms. As she has said: when the passion was coming to an end, I was packing my suitcase.
