CHAPTER 1
ELIZABETH
As Elizabeth Bennet took her first steps toward Vallencomb Manor, she allowed herself the luxury of one last deep breath before she knocked on the front door. When she accepted the position as governess for the Vallencomb children, she knew she would be living in one of the finest homes in Lambton. But she never anticipated anything like what lay before her.
The stunning, expansive estate was surrounded by a lush green lawn. The smell of wildflowers from the field in the distance wafted in the air. Elizabeth walked across the emerald grass, the soft blades bending beneath her feet. She climbed the steps, feeling a nervous knot form deep in the pit of her stomach, and knocked.
It took only seconds for a butler to answer. He was as tall as the columns out front and his cheery smile made Elizabeth feel right at home.
Miss Bennet, what a pleasure to meet you. Please, come into the parlor. I am to escort you to Mrs. Vallencomb.
Elizabeth accepted the servant's outstretched arm, allowing him to lead her through a magnificent double doorway into a large, cozy room. It was decorated in a cheery yellow with a dark maroon trim and a blazing fire burned in the fireplace. Everywhere she looked, there was evidence that the Vallencombs, while a family of considerable means, were also as thick as thieves.
The butler gestured for Elizabeth to sit on the sofa.
If you would wait here, Mrs. Vallencomb will be here shortly. If you need anything in the meantime, my name is Mr. Kemp. Welcome to Vallencomb Manor.
Mr. Kemp left Elizabeth to explore the parlor while she waited for the lady of the house. Like most parlors, the room was an extension of the formal dining room. A glossy mahogany table was spread with a gold damask cloth and set for tea. The china was porcelain and adorned with the Vallencomb family crest. Silver teapots sparkled in the center of the table.
Elizabeth admired the room before her eyes were drawn to the portrait of a woman painted above the fireplace. She was striking with dark hair and eyes that beamed with life. Mrs. Vallencomb, no doubt. The portrait was quite remarkable with its rich, dark colors and bold strokes.
Elizabeth rose from the sofa, hoping to get a better look and was amazed to notice that Mrs. Vallencomb was at the door.
She was even more beautiful than the painting.
Do you enjoy art?
she asked in an accent that Elizabeth did not recognize.
I love it. Your portrait was done by a very talented painter,
she replied.
Mrs. Vallencomb smiled. The painter has had a very successful career in Bath for the past few years.
His work is outstanding.
When the two ladies were seated, a young woman poured them tea and
