      Futility

      In my life, as early as I can remember, there were a lot of tough lessons. And although they were tough, they seemed to prove most beneficial to where I am today. As a reference to the looking back into my life, a scripture comes to mind, one that helped me to understand the things I went through. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope (Romans 8:20, ESV).

      I remember as if it was yesterday; the life once lived in the blackness of sin now brings the light and fragrance of the truth with every footstep. Oh, how the Lord does wonders on earth with the children of men. Yes, again, just like yesterday, it was so seemingly close, the breath of it still reminds me of the past heartache now brought to comfort. As I reflect upon the yesterday of tomorrow, I will illustrate it as it was in truth.

      The life in the past was filled with hopelessness and blackness of darkness. I remember being raised in the most anxious of tensions. My mother was rarely, if ever, present in those days of my childhood. My father was the same. At a young age, I was thrown to this relative and that while the pursuit of mother and father were being achieved. So much despair and loneliness, it was pressingly hard to bear. Quite often, heartache spilled out in the form of an outpouring of tears, emptying all that was within me; expression of such heartache was often consoled by none other than my own empty thoughts. I had no idea how to handle the things I was going through, and that led me further into despair.

      My life, shortly after this fact, had unraveled in the most surprising way. I was not prepared in the least bit on how to foresee the coming events. Most of my life, as a matter of fact, had gone about in the same way.

      My father enjoyed drinking in extreme excess and, shortly after starting, would blackout. And on one of those dark nights, I remember it so clearly, as clear as still water. It was a snowy night in the Wisconsin winter, and the roads were iced over like the glaze on a donut. We were at a farm with a great many heads of cattle. These were dairy cattle, and we were to feed and water them for the night season. I was so excited to partake in such an event, I could hardly stand it. See, things like this as a child paint such a vivid picture of our innocence.

      I was told to wait in the car as my father left and travailed to get all the cattle fed in a timely manner. This request left me all the more anxious; all I wanted to do was to help. So as a child, I thought I would go and take a closer look. What I found was a very over inebriated father struggling to hold himself up. He saw me and did not seem to liven up. Although he was hardly able to walk, he did and stumbled to the car.

      Now in the car, it was cold, and the wind was howling outside the windows. My father started the car, put it in reverse, and the car would not move. In the icy winter season, it is fitting to be extra cautious where one parks; the ice oftentimes locks you into the parking place. As my father struggled to get the car out of its position so that we could leave, he found out rather quickly that the car was stuck. So he violently pursued to get the car to rock back and forth. Meanwhile, my two sisters and I were terrified at what was befalling us at the present. There was a fence that the car was nudged up against; however,
