CHAPTER 1
Alice stared at the little carved duck she had in her hands for the umpteenth time and smiled.
It was a bitter smile, a smile she would never get tired of showing.
It was a small gift from the most precious being she had ever had in her life and she would never get tired of keeping it as her possession.
There was a low knock on her door shortly and her maid Lara came in, she and Lara had been friends for a long time and she had picked her to be her maid when her father the king asked her if she wanted a maid to accompany her to her hidden castle, she had agreed to it and picked her best friend, not that she wanted to make her serve her but because she wanted to stay with someone who was her friend and she could talk to.
"Alice, his highness asked for your presence in the royal castle and had sent two carriages to escort you down to pitburg royal hall at once.
Alice sighed and shot her a sad look.
"So the king actually remembered today was my birthday? Of course, he would, it will be a shame if a princess does not get engaged on her eighteenth birthday as the traditions imply.
I knew this would come sooner or later, just didn't expect him to remember my birthday, I thought I would be let off the hook since I'm the invincible one but he actually remembered."
She smiled bitterly and said to herself.
She didn't know when tears had begun to roll down her cheeks.
Eight years ago she was just a normal kid who lived happily in the castle with her mother and father who were both king and queen.
She didn't expect something tragic would happen and snatch away her happy life from her.
On her tenth birthday while she and her mother were throwing her a noble party she excused herself to go look for her father who hasn't shown up to give her her birthday gift yet, but she didn't expect to come across something as shocking as that.
While at the doors to her father's chambers she heard him talking to a woman, they were arguing. Her ten years old self at that moment was very smart and already register what they were talking about.
The lady was claiming of him being the father of her child while he was pissed and asked the lady to keep quiet about it, the woman threatened him and his family. She said if she and her daughter do not get the title they deserve then she would make sure to tell everyone about their hidden child.
She was peeping in through the half-opened door and the lady happened to catch a glimpse of her, the lady smiled evilly at her and that was the beginning of her nightmare.
Although she ran away and her father didn't notice her, later that night she lost everything she hold dear to her heart.
While her mother was tucking her to bed something happened, a masked man broke into her room and killed her dear mother in cold blood, the dagger was aimed at her but her mother took it ok her behalf, seeing that the mission to kill the little princess has failed the masked person ran away, leaving the dagger in the hands of the little princess who cried and hugged her mother on her laps as her mother spent the last moments she could with her.
She could clearly remember her mother's last words don't cry sweetheart, I will never leave you. Here, take this and be strong for me, you are stronger than you ever know, daughter.
Those were her last words before she died and tugged the little carved duck into her hands before breathing her last and giving up.
She clutched onto her bleeding mother and the dagger as the door flung open and suddenly her father walked into the room in a rage.
Seeing his beloved queen lying on the floor in cold blood and the dagger in his daughter's hands he didn't know what to think anymore.
You...did you kill your mother Alice?
He asked with a shaky voice but the little girl only shut him up with and dangerous and murderous look.
"She stood up with the dagger and approached him with red bloody eyes, her father was shocked and moved back.
You.. you killed mother, you killed her!
The girl threw the dagger at him in rage and ran out of the room.
For days she was missing and was eventually found in the woods after five days, her father was blinded by the rage he had towards his queen's death and blamed her for it.
A grand burial was held for the queen and the people mourned her for months, Alice was stripped of her rank as the crown princess and the name and title were given to her new stepsister, the daughter of the woman she has seen with her father the other time.
She was then sent to the hidden hills of punthurg and banned from the palace or any other village till her eighteenth birthday, she has termed evil and the killer of her own mother the queen.
Her father never visited her for eight years and only sent food supplies to her at her hidden dark castle, he let her keep one companion which is her friend.
She had a deep hatred towards him over the years, she found out through Lara that the king married that evil mistress only a year after his wife, her mother's death and they have been living happily as a family along with her stepsister.
She hated everything that had to do with the throne and the king and never wants to have anything to do with them.
Turning around and looking out the window to see the carriage she felt thirsty for revenge.
CHAPTER 2
Tell him I'll be out in a moment. Just need to change.
Alice said and Lara was surprised that Alice agreed so quickly to go to the palace she dreaded the most.
But only she knew that deep in her heart she yearned for that day, she was going to destroy all their lives. Not in a rush but she will make them so miserable that they will beg for dead but won't find any.
That was her plan
Within a short while, Alice and Lara were already in the carriage riding back to the royal town for the first time in eight years.
A ball will take place at the palace today, both you and your stepsister were born on the same day.
Lara said to Alice hoping to lighten up the mood at least once.
What is her name?
Alice asked out of the blue.
Her name is Cynthia Alexandria II and she is going to be the crown princess of the whole of Mariposa land.. she will be officially crowned today and both you and she will be present in the presence of the crowd and guest for the first time since you two were born.
Lara said to Alice who didn't nod but just kept quiet as thoughts raced through her mind.
It was a tradition for the royal family to never reveal the face of its princesses until they are eighteen, only close friends to them or guards and maids could have a glimpse of their faces.
And the queen?
Alice asked again.
Her name is queen Helene Purch Alexandria II.
Lara answered her again.
She knew her best friend was not always in a good mood and would respect that.
Suddenly they heard commotions from outside their carriage.
It was as if the horses were in a frenzy and they were now running helter-skelter thus making the carriage shake.
What's going on?
Lara peeped out of the window as she saw that they were surrounded by a group of bandits wearing black all through.
They were being attacked and two of the guards were already killed.
What do you want?
One of the guards asked the bandits.
Alice was aware of all that was going on out there but chose to keep quiet and calm.
Are you aware this is the rotal carriage?
The guard asked with an angry voice.
One of the men in black showed him a royal seal.
So you are from the Aceland, Royal province? I'm so sorry to offend you... Did the emperor send you?
The guard was now shaking in fear.
Alice was sure she heard them say Aceland province.
One thing was clear, Mariposa was a very vast land but was controlled by her father the king.
There were many other provinces on the large Glitz planet but just like mariposa, there were many other countries ( known as provinces in the book ) all of them were ruled by their kings, but there is an overall ruler over the whole planet.
The province name every other province fears and respects, the Aceland.
Four major provinces rule over numerous countries and villages of glitz.
The western province which is also known as Mariposa is named mariposa because the legendary fairy was born there hundreds of years ago, she was the only fairy in the land and had died a long time ago.
The eastern province is also called Galaxy Wing which is also as powerful as Mariposa.
The north which is the Crestland is also on the same level as the first two.
And then there is the southern province which is Aceland.
Its level of power is combined with all other three provinces and its king is known as the emperor.
The emperor who was also the king of Aceland was a very powerful man.
He owns the most lands and has more army and power than the other kings, overall he is their ruler, but what did he want from them?
What do you want from us?
It was as if the guard had read her mind.
We request an audience with the princess!
The other man said with a firm voice.
You must be mistaken, but she is not the crown princess. The crown princess is back in the castle.
The guard stuttered but was stabbed at the moment.
I said the crown prince demands an audience with the first princess of Mariposa, and when I speak you obey!
The man who had just stabbed one of the guards who accompanied Alice growled in anger.
We only want to talk to the princess, and then we'll leave!
A cold and demanding voice said icily from amongst the men in black, the others have way revealing a man who was wrapped up in black from head to toe, his cape covered most of his face and he had a mask on, overall he was the most dressed man amongst the others and one could totally see the difference.
Alice who had heard all the commotions outside was getting tensed up.
It's okay, I'll see them as requested!
She yelled from inside her carriage.
But Alice, your not allowed to show your face to anyone just yet! The king will be furious!
Lara tried to stop Alice who only gave her a shutting look.
And who says the king has to know of this meeting? I shall only talk to him and hear him out or he may be hostile and order his guards to kill us, do you want that? You don't have to worry I shall cover my face with a veil!
Alice replied and took a black veil from the little basket she had beside her, gently tying it around her face and then flinging her cape over her head, hiding her lush lilac hair behind it.
She gently stepped out of the carriage and immediately a man in black clothing grabbed her by the arm and held her by the neck like a hostage.
CHAPTER 3
She winced in pain and gently followed him towards the men in black despite the fright she felt, if it were a normal girl getting ambushed she would have already screamed in fright or wet her garment but Alice was brave and didn't show her fear in her face.
The men made way as Alice was dragged into a carriage, a carriage that was larger than the one her so-called father had sent over to pick her up.
The moment she stepped into the carriage a very gentle mint scent enveloped her nose, she looked around the dark carriage that was fully covered in thick black curtains in fear.
Don't just stand there, have a sit. Princess.
A very cold and rigid voice snapped at her, it was as cold as ever and didn't have any sort of emotion laced in it.
She gently sat on the hard seat in the carriage and stared into space as she could not see the face of the man in the carriage.
Who are you?
She asked, she tried to sound not so obvious but her fear was written in her voice, she was shaking and her breathing was as loud as a trumpet.
Just like my minions have said, I'm the crown prince of Aceland. And you can stop being afraid I shall not devour you!
He replied to her.
Eeermn... I am not afraid of you it's just..
I can hear your knuckles clasp against each other, your knees are also shaking vigorously and your breathing is as annoying as a frog's voice. But I shall not mind that!
The man said and Alice gasped.
She was speechless.
I will not keep you waiting here for a long time and shall get down to business, please remove your cape!
He said, it was rather in an ordering tone.
No way! I am a princess and I am not allowed to show my face to anyone until my eighteenth birthday, you can come and see my face later at the ball if that is what you want to look at!
Alice retorted at once.
She somewhat found the man very creepy.
Pardon me, your highness, I did not say you should remove your veil, I shall only take a look at your hair!
The man said and Alice was rather more confused.
Why do you want to look at my hair?
She asked.
I am trying to be patient with you my lady, please remove your veil I shall only take a look at your hair!
He ordered.
Alice had no choice but to gently remove her black cape revealing her long wavy lilac hair that shined even in the dark.
Lavander hair....
He muttered.
Do you perhaps have a birthmark on your spine?
He asked.
A butterfly precisely!
He added and Alice stared at him in shock.
How did he know the secret that only Lara knew!"
She had a birthmark of a butterfly on her spine and could only be looked at it through a mirror.
Yes... How did you know and why are you asking me these wired questions? You sound creepy...
We replied to him.
Well thank you for confirming it to me my lady, I shall see you at the ball tonight, please excuse yourself!
He ordered.
Alice was shocked, what type of prince will be this rude to a princess?
She didn't even know what his face looked like and he is ordering her out of his carriage, isn't he supposed to escort her out?
I presume your lordship can be kind enough to tell me your name. Maybe I could give you a more courtesied hello during the ball tonight!
Alice said, hoping she could get to know his name.
That I can't tell my lady..
His voice was still cold.
As Alice stood up from the carriage seat she was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of his silver eyes, they were cold and piercing and his long white hair almost covered part of his left eye.
That was all she could catch from his face as she quickly walked down from the carriage.
With a sigh of relief, she walked back to her own carriage still thinking about the coldness in his voice and how he asked her creepy questions.
As she sat back down on her chair Lara quickly grabbed her arms looking around her whole body and looking for traces of bruises or anything of all sorts but there were non.
"Come on Lara I am totally fine, but the crown prince of Aceland sure is a very strange man, he would not tell me his name and would not let me look at his face, he strangely asked to take a look at my hair and after that, he asked about my secret birthmark.
I am still surprised how he knew that I a had butterfly on my spine!"
Alice complained to Lara who looked at her in awe.
"That is really very strange, why will the sir of the south ask for your birthmark? He must be someone close or knows something about the events of your birth.
By the way, he is called sir Gagé Alfredo of the south Aceland."
Lara replied Alice.
As she sat back on her carriage chair and her troop rode away his odd name lingered on her lips.
Gagé...
She repeatedly muttered in her mind as she does not want to forget his name easily.
We are here!
One of the guards from outside the carriage yelled and Alice jerked up from her seat, she had almost fallen asleep from the very long tiring ride to the huge Mariposa town where the palace which used to be her home was located.
She quietly put on her veil and covered her face with a cape, she made sure to put on her dark gloves as the curtains were pulled open and Lara walked out before her, then helped her down from the carriage.
CHAPTER 4
There were a few guards outside the carriage who bowed and then began to lead her toward the huge palace gates, she had been away from home for eight years and her memories of that palace were now very sketchy, she could only remember a few parts of the palace.
Two women were walking by them but as expected non of them bowed or even stopped to greet her as a princess or royalty deserved.
As far as the people were concerned she had been ripped off of her princess title and her stepsister has been awarded the title which was supposed to be rightfully her by birth because of something she didn't do.
Everyone knew her as the evil princess who killed her own mother in cold blood as a child.
It must be princess Alice... Heard the king asked his men to escort her back for the ceremony!
She was able to hear one of the women say, she had very incredible hearing which was strange to her. She could hear any noise even if it was at least twenty feet away from her.
She is lucky the king still considered her as his daughter and not a traitor. I guess he would marry her off to one of his commanders to cover up the shame she had already brought upon him!
The other woman replied, it hurt Alice a lot but she just walked ahead and pretended she never heard anything.
She knew of the circumstances of her mother's death and had vowed to bring justice to her late mother by killing anyone who had a hand in her mother's death even if it cost her her life she didn't care about her reputation as no one even cared about her or if she were a princess.
After a long walk, they were finally in the palace and both Alice and Lara were then escorted to the throne room to meet her father, however, they would only stand ten feet away from the king and queen since both of them was not considered part of the royal family.
Greetings your royal highnesses! I have successfully escorted my lady back home as you instructed!
Lara fell on her knees at once and greeted the king and the queen.
But Alice stood adamant on her feet, her head up high even though no one could see her face, she had no single smile on her face and she looked like someone who was about to destroy a whole community.
Lara turned around staring at Alice who just stood as if she were a poster.
Won't you pay respect to the king?
She nudge her but Alice kept quiet.
The queen who was sitting on her throne beside the king stared at the two ladies, the displeasure she had towards Alice was very well printed on her face, and even though she doesn't even remember what the girl looked like she was still annoyed with her.
"Usually I would make sure anyone who dares show his or her disrespect in front of his royal highness gets severely punished, but you are lucky I am in a very good mood today as you already know that my dear daughter is going to be crowned today.
I'm Very aware that you are the king's daughter but you currently have nothing, your rank is as low as a commoner so don't be too rude dear Alice.."
Queen Helen blurted out, she tried not to sound too annoying for her husband's sake but even a blind man would tell clearly she was annoyed with Alice's presence.
"I don't mind being a commoner at all, in fact, I've been one for eight years and I've gotten very used to it.
What I haven't gotten used to is bowing before a king and a queen who clearly do not deserve my respect!"
Alice retorted, she had no fear or whatsoever in her voice and Lara gasped in fright.
She knew the two of them were already in for a lot of trouble and she had tried to warn Alice to behave but to no avail.
The queen was very shocked while the king just sat on his throne quietly as if he was the only one in the room and didn't care what was going on.
You little brat! How dare you address the king and queen like that! Apologize at once!
The queen yelled and stood from her seat.
If you would please excuse me your highnesses I'd be on my way, you know I need to get ready for my ball tonight, it's not just your princess that's having a ball tonight!
Alice said, not minding the hideous look on the queen's face.
After bowing slightly she walked away from the throne room without looking back, Lara also bowed and quickly ran after Alice who was almost at the door.
Alice was going to reach the exit door of the throne room when the guards sectioned there suddenly pulled open the large door and a happy-looking girl walked in.
She had very nice brown hair and a very pretty face that looked innocent, she was, in fact, princess Cynthia Alexandria of Mariposa and everyone adored her, she was the one and only daughter of queen Helen and she is treasured so much although she had a very foul character that most of the town people hate, but they could do nothing but only obey her when she orders them or their heads will be served to queen Helen on a plate.
Cynthia was whistling as she walked in and didn't notice Alice who was dressed in all black and a veil covered her face, thus making them bump into each other.
Cynthia stumbled backward as she massaged her forehead, Alice also felt the pain but didn't show it and just made to walk past the door, it wasn't her fault after all that Cynthia was not looking where she was going and had bumped into her while in a hurry.
Have you gone crazy, how dare you bump into me and then walked away without getting punished!
CHAPTER 5
Cynthia shrieked in anger and grabbed Alice by the hand dragging her backward.
Alice hissed in annoyance as she watched Lara shiver in fear and Cynthia roared like a mad dog, she had no idea who Cynthia was since she had never seen her.
Who are you?
Alice asked Cynthia.
She tried sounding as polite as possible, Cynthia on the other hand scoffed in shock and cast Alice a deadly glare.
Who am I? Have you gone nuts? I mean it's okay that you don't recognize me because I walk around with my veil but are you blind enough to not know that I'm the princess? Who do you think will be allowed into this throne room except me huh?
Cynthia barked and grabbed Alice by her hair trying to drag her to the ground.
Alice who was not a weak girl grabbed Cynthia's hands in return and twisted them, making Cynthia let go of her hair by force.
Cynthia yelled in pain and shrieked.
What do you think you are doing to my daughter? Guards grab her and escort her out of this chamber at once!
The queen who heard commotions from the inner courtroom walked out in annoyance.
The guards made to grab Alice but she shut them with a death glare which made two of them hesitate.
Ah, so you're the so-called princess Cynthia! Look here, I don't care who you are just don't trouble me. It's very rude to bump into someone and then blame that person for it! Let's go, Lara!
Alice said and walked out of the throne room with Lara before Helen could get to the door.
Cynthia cried in anger and kicked the guard near her on the shin.
Aaaarghhh! How dare she!
Cynthia yelled in frustration that someone dared to offend her like that, in her eighteen years of life no one has ever shunned her in that manner and it annoyed the freak out of her.
Alice sat in the cold room as she watch Lara arrange a few clothes on the take beside her, she looked around the familiar room with mixed feelings.
It holds many childhood memories she couldn't forget or let go of.
She could clearly remember her mother's sweet voice lingering in her ears.
Go to sleep Alice, you are a kid and can't stay up late!
Her mother's voice was recalled in her mind, she remembered her mother always tucking her to bed every single day while saying the same phrase all the time
She fought back the tears that almost hit her face as she recalled the day her mother died in cold blood, someone had broken in and stabbed her in the heart, although Alice could not remember what that person looked like because of the veil and disguise of that person she could still remember that person hard a white pearl bracelet on his or her left hand.
She had vowed to destroy anyone behind her sorrows and she would stop at nothing till she has gotten her revenge.
Alice I will need you to pick between these three ball gowns, one of which you would wear tonight.
Lara's voice suddenly snapped her out of her trance and she looked over to see that Lara had finished organizing the items on the table.
There were three sets of clothes laid neatly on the table.
A black ballgown and a yellow mermaid gown, the last piece was a purple short gown that wasn't as long and bubbly as the other two.
You pick anything that will you think looks good to you Lara, you don't have to ask me all the time since you and I aren't strangers and you know what I like and dislike.
Alice quietly said and looked out of the window.
Then I'll strongly suggest you go with this purple outfit, it's more fitted and would match your eye and hair color. It will also allow you to move around freely in it without any difficulties!
Lara replied and Alice nodded in accordance.
There was a knock on the door shortly and Lara walked over to the door to see who it was.
Your highness!
She gasped and bowed as she discovered it was the king who was at the door with his guards.
Alice looked over towards the door with a cold face.
Lara opened the door slowly and the king walked in, looking around the room as if he hasn't been there in ages.
He stood before Alice and stared at her for a while without talking before handing her a black box.
This is your birthday present Alice. I wasn't able to give you presents for eight years since you've been away for that time being so I got you something to make up for it!
The king said and handed her the black box.
She refused to take it.
And is it my fault that I've been away for eight years huh?
She asked.
I know you and I have a very huge rift in our relationship as father and daughter but I only sent you away to reflect on yourself and what you did! Not to punish you!
The king said firmly.
Alice scoffed.
Reflect on me? You must be kidding me, I've been trying to justify myself to you for the past eight years of the fact that I did not kill my own mother but you choose not to believe me! Do you think I'll kill the person who ever loved me, the only person who cared that I existed? You are the most ridiculous king I've ever met in my entire life and if your mind tells you that a ten-year-old will kill her own sweet mother then I must say you are a very generous king! I shall not accept your gift as you never cared about me! You removed my rank as a crowned princess and gave it up to your illegitimate child! I am the princess! I deserve to get crowned tonight not some thief!
Alice yelled and her father glared at her.
Shut up ALICIA DAISY ALEXANDRIA!
her father roared at her.
CHAPTER 6
Alice was shocked if ever her father calls her by her full name it means he was utterly angry and might punish her thoroughly.
It angered and shocked her that he would get angry at her that much for calling his dear daughter an illegitimate child.
"Do you treasure her that much? Fine, go ahead
