    The Story of Bramford

    the Pirate

When I was just seven, my mother died. My father was so distraught that he could no longer care for me properly, so I was sent to an orphanage for ten gruelling years. I was small and rather weak, and I was bullied because of it. So most days I very much regretted even being born. On the eve of my seventeenth birthday I ditched the orphanage for good, carrying the small bundle of linen that was all I had in the world. Shortly after arriving in a new town I bumped into a fellow runaway, and learning we had a similar background we became fast friends. He was known as Eddie Marshall, and I as Bramford Willis. Quite by luck we found ourselves working in a small bakery shop down Marlow High street. The pay was good but seeing as how neither of us were taught particularly well how to look after ourselves we always ended up looking a bit shabbier than most. We ticked along working in this little shop for a while until an unusual stranger happened across our path that changed my life forever.

It started out as any other day, waking early in our dingy lodgings, a quick brisk walk down to the bakery, and then a wonderful inhale of breath as you walk through the back door into the kitchen. If we were lucky when the cook was in a good mood, she’d let us nab a mouthful or two of the fresh bread right out of the oven.

On 11th June, to be exact, in walked the strange man. He smelled of rum and sweat and I thought he looked suspiciously like a pirate. He was indeed a pirate and giving me and Eddie a once over, taking in our bedraggled appearance he asked us if we wanted to join his crew. I jumped at the chance, to explore the world and sail the seas, what an adventure that would be! Eddie took a little persuading, but eventually the lure of the sea took ahold of him. This was the beginning of me becoming Bramford, the most feared pirate the seas had ever seen.

When we boarded the ship with our meagre belongings we found that the crew itself were not a very friendly bunch. We had started at the bottom of the ladder, fit only for scrubbing the deck and climbing to the crow’s nest, at least that’s how they saw us. Growing up in an orphanage this hostility did not bother me much, knowing in time my worth would be seen, but Eddie had previously come from a fine family, with fine people, and the hardest part of his life had been when he ran away and met me.

After a while the hostility really affected him, he could barely eat, and never slept. Eventually one night he went into the Captain’s quarters to explain that being a pirate was not for him and when they next paid port he would be leaving. The Captain seemingly amused by this told Eddie that the only way a pirate ever
