      Thundering applause filled the darkened Chicago theater. Slowly the curtain parted. A spot shone on a lone figure standing stage center.

      Maggie and rockhopper penguin detective Mr. Pin watched as Mercury the Magician took a deep bow. Suddenly, he swirled his purple velvet cape and disappeared.

      I know that trick, said Mr. Pin to his friend Maggie. I would tell you how it’s done, but I have been sworn to secrecy.

      Since fourteen-year-old Maggie had met the rockhopper penguin years ago, he was always full of surprises. Where did you learn how to do it? asked Maggie.

      From another magician in Mexico, said Mr. Pin. He happened to tell me about Mercury. He said the Chicago magician could make just about anything disappear. Including himself.

      Interesting, said Maggie. My theater friends gave me these tickets to see Mercury’s show tonight.

      Maggie didn’t get a chance to ask Mr. Pin any more questions about magic. Suddenly, her phone lit up.

      It’s Sally.
