Director: Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
School: Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:
Director: Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
School: Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.

Recitation in Concert:
1 Thessalonians 4:4–9 (KJV)
4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.
7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

19 Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
20 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.
21 He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.

Intro
The trauma of injustice gives birth to creative courage. From the beginning, our enslaved ancestors had to boldly create new ways to cope under the horrific oppression brought upon them through the bonds of slavery. These creative measures and courageous acts of defiance were motivated by the innate desire we all have as human beings to preserve and protect our lives. From the cryptic messages they sang in the hymns of the field, to the innovative practices of repurposing the scraps of their master’s table, our ancestors learned how to leverage all they had to survive. Perhaps they had been inspired by the creative courage demonstrated by Jochebed, Moses’ mother.
At the time of our lesson, the Pharaoh of Egypt had issued an edict requiring all male children born to the Hebrew women to be killed (1:16). They were to be thrown into the Nile River as soon as they were birthed from the womb (1:22). Moses was born under these circumstances. To preserve his life, which in turn vouchsafed his destiny, Moses’ mother had to think quickly and creatively.
This lesson features the birth and adoption of Moses that resulted, not only in the preservation of his own life, but ultimate deliverance of his people. It is a narrative that reveals the extreme lengths that one will go to protect their own and how God
