About this ebook

James Stewart is a Chrono-Cop who has trained his whole life for a mission of incredible importance: He needs to travel back through time to the Old West of 1845 and prevent a tragedy which killed hundreds of people and sparked centuries of mistrust between a group of settlers and a local Comanche tribe. To do this, he’ll make a one-way jump into the body of his nearest living relative at that time: frontier Marshall Edwin Stewart, who made the fatal error that originally sparked the conflict.

However, things don’t go at all according to plan. Instead of being transferred into Edwin’s body as expected, James is instead transferred into the body of a local saloon girl named Rose who has no power to affect the events which James was sent back to change. But it doesn’t change the facts of his mission, saloon girl or not. He’ll have to scramble to find some way to influence Edwin’s fateful decisions while also coming to grips with the fact that he is now a woman—and will be for the rest of his life.

If James can’t complete his objective, hundreds will die, and he might even be among the victims! But as he makes contact with his Edwin and gets to know the rugged and handsome frontier man better, he starts to worry about something more than even that: The strange feelings of love and affection growing in his chest for this dashing western Marshall.

    Chapter 1

James got dressed carefully that morning. Of course, he wouldn’t be wearing these clothes for long, but he still wanted to look good. It was a big day for him. Today, he would be going on his mission.

This would be his last day in the year 2084. Starting tomorrow, he would reside in 1845, where he would stay for the rest of his life.

It was an unfortunate drawback of time travel. You could only travel back, not forward, and not in your own body. James’ mind would be transported to the body of his closest ancestor in the area at the time of the jump. He would become them and make decisions based on his mission parameters.

After a good breakfast that would soon no longer be in his stomach, James took one last look at his apartment. He had known when he chose to become a chrono-cop that he would one day be leaving all this behind, but he couldn’t help a tiny twinge of regret. James would miss his modest home and his friends on the force. He would undoubtedly miss technology.

Chase was waiting for him when he arrived at work. James. Are you ready? There’s still time to back out, you know.

Chase, I’ve been training for this for five years! I’m not going to back out.

James had deliberately avoided forming relationships as much as he could ever since he had joined the force. He didn’t have any living family—one of the things that made him a good candidate for the chrono-cop program. He’d had no romantic relationships since entering his training.

As James walked through to the briefing room, a couple of people clapped him on the shoulder. None offered gifts; he couldn’t take anything where he was going. Instead, they gave him words.

Megan told him what an honor it had been to train alongside him. Fabian wished him the best and assured James that he would succeed. Kiran told James that he would miss him.

James smiled, blinking back tears. He would miss these people. Becoming friends with them had been unavoidable, what with spending almost every waking minute with them for the last five years.

Where he was going, making friends was going to be difficult. The man he was set to jump into was a formidable, harsh leader, tough as nails and not prone to such pleasant things as friendship.

Chase ushered James into the briefing room. Now, I know you know all this, but I have to go over it with you one more time; it’s procedure.

    Go ahead.

"You’ll be jumping into 1845. Edwin Stewart has just arrived in Westtown, a small mining village on the west coast. As your ten-times-great-grandfather, he is your closest living ancestor in the time and area that we know of.

We have been unable to locate your grandmother, but the technology will jump you into the most compatible ancestor available, and we are certain that Edwin is the more compatible of the two. You don’t need to worry about her, even if she is in the area.

James nodded. He knew all of this by heart, but it’s not like he could call to double-check the details down the line; so he focused, making sure he remembered everything correctly. The research he’d been doing on the time period had jumbled up in his head with his nerves. The slang, politics, popular culture, and cultural differences fought for dominance. It felt like the minutes before a big exam.

Now, you know that the technology is not as precise as we would like. We’re going to try to send you in about a month before the critical point in your mission to give you time to adjust, but it could be as much as a week or two off in either direction.

A week or two won’t make much difference, James said.

Agreed. Now, at the critical point in your mission, the Comanche send Edwin Stewart a peace offering. He misconstrues their words, which leads to a pitched battle between the settlers and Comanche. Hundreds died, but that wasn’t the worst of it. This battle sowed the seeds for mutual distrust that affected people’s actions for over a century.

James had studied the history. He knew how important it was to stop that battle from happening. The fight was followed by dozens of skirmishes over the years, which killed in total five times more people than the original conflict had felled.

Now, you need to be on alert. Your mind will remain yours, but you will be in a different body, and the body affects the mind. You can expect to see some personality changes. Don’t fight them unless they are going to prevent you from completing your mission. People have tried before. They invariably burn out and fail.

James had read the changed history of a couple of successful missions, as well as ones that had gone bad. Chase was right. In most cases, when the agent failed, it was because they had tried to fight their new reality rather than embracing it.

You must remember that these people are a lot less progressive than we are, Chase warned. Bisexuality might be commonplace here, but be careful disclosing your orientation there; same-gender relationships were far more common than you’d think, but announcing yourself to the wrong person might be dangerous. The dynamics of orientation as we understand them are completely different.

I know, Chase. I won’t be stupid about this.

I know you won’t. The men of the old west treated women very well, but it’s still going to look different from what you’re used to. They’re put on a pedestal, not considered true equals—something to protect. So be sure you’ve studied the gender politics of the time and can adjust yourself accordingly. We had a mission fail a couple of years back because the agent tried to start a women’s rights movement when he was supposed to be doing his job.

James remembered that. He had great sympathy for the agent in question, but he knew that he would need to do better than that. I’m not going to start a women’s rights movement, but I will treat women with respect.

As long as you do so subtly and don’t call others out on their behavior, I don’t think it will be a problem.

James knew he would struggle with this aspect,
