#1 I was flying on a practice mission at four in the morning. I was zipped in my flying coveralls, fleece-lined boots, and leather fleece-lined pants. I had my navigation kit, two bags, and five #10 grocery sacks.
#2 The crew of Blakely’s plane was getting ready. I was in charge of the lead crew, which meant I was in front. I was not a lead navigator. On all my missions so far, I had been comfortable in a Tail-End Charlie plane.
#3 When we were out of the takeoff pattern and climbing, I heard Doug and Blakely crawl to the nose compartment. I spread out my maps and equipment. I was so relieved that I took time to notice I had been sweating.
#4 On the first leg, I was able to see every railroad, river, and town. I was able to navigate thanks to Forky’s help, and I was able to check our magnetic compass heading and our indicated air speed to calculate what the wind was doing to us.

I was the pilot on this mission, and I was extremely efficient in the clouds. I knew where we were every minute of the flight. I could be even more efficient in the clouds because I wasn’t distracted by having to do pilotage.
#6
The group went home. It was a piece of cake. Almost straight south, with unlimited ceiling and visibility, the coast of Scotland right below us.
