    FOUR LIFE GOALS:

    Four Purusharths or goals of the life be,

    So very crystal clear in life undisputedly;

    1

    1. Artha

    Artha - getting useful wealth and prosperity,

    Finding the meaning for living herein truly;

    2

    If in poverty, in a state of worry constantly,

    About how to support and feed one’s family;

    3

    How can one pursue the path of spirituality?

    In worry, focus on the Divine union cannot be;

    4

    Artha - attainment of wealth, material prosperity,

    Its realization on righteous and moral basis be;

    5

    Artha - the pursuit of material wealth does be,

    Bringing material comforts to a person clearly;

    6

    Spiritual growth, material wealth not elite be,

    And no spiritual seeker needs to be in poverty;

    7

    Even Universe - reflection of abundance be,

    Abundant Nature be, abundant Divine quality;

    8

    The important thing is not to be attached clearly,

    To possession or attainment of wealth unfailingly;

    9

    It either transcended or sought with detachment be,

    With awareness, wealth same as Divine pursuit be;

    10

    As abundance or wealth as a form of the Divine be,

    In this detachment, one attains wealth unaffectedly;

    11

    Hence desire to pursue dies away automatically,

    Thus paving the way for Moksha ever hinderingly.

    Pursuit of abundance not in contrast with Divinity,

    When free of worries, focus on union with Divine be.

    2. Kama

    Kama - fulfilling desires, acting repeatedly,

    It the physical, material desire fulfillment be;

    14

    Fulfilling biological, other desires but worldly;

    Desires as per Dharma fulfilled legitimately,

    15

    Desires are in various forms – to be wealthy,

    Powerful, sexual, recognition, service – many;

    16

    Kama Purusharth advocates desires fulfilled be,

    Albeit in awareness, without harming anybody;

    17

    To reach ultimate destination evolve spiritually,

    The barrier of desires needs to be crossed truly;

    18

    This achieved by fulfilling the desires be clearly,

    Or by sublimating or transcending them totally;

    19

    Suppressing desires not recommended certainly,

    Then as fully coiled spring held down by force be;

    20

    Suppressed desires can erupt so unpredictably,

    Causing undesirable consequences definitely.

    21

    As one becomes aware of one’s desires clearly,

    Fulfills them in awareness, without judgement truly;

    22

    One reaches a stage to sublimate them completely,

    The Divine, the Universe – lends a hand certainly.

    Artha, Kama important for growth of society,

    Dharma – righteousness, moral order, duty;

    3. Dharma

    Dharma – the foundation of all human goals be,

    Refers to obligations, conduct, moral duties;

    25

    Dharma the do’s and don’ts in the life but be,

    Dharma always given highest importance clearly;

    26

    A person born will perform certain duties surely,

    Soul houses self in physical vehicle – the body;

    27

    The body most suits for performing these duties,

    Physical work needed, the duties – Dharma be;

    28

    Dharma - the rightful duty of any of the beings be,

    This is the true calling, what they born to do be;

    29

    A person's dharma combination of things does be,

    As that person progresses through life continually;

    30

    Different life stages – different dharmas clearly,

    Tuning to inner guide identifies dharma clearly.

    If engaged in dharma - wealth, desires fulfilled be,

    In this manner earns ‘moksha’ – liberation surely.

    4. Moksha

    Moksha – the liberation form, the web of Maya be,

    Freedom from the cycles of birth and death clearly;

    33

    Moksha – experiences of divine happiness does be,

    This the ultimate goal of life and God-realization be;

    34

    Moksha means liberation, realization of Self truly,

    It the ultimate destination of this human birth be;

    35

    Its grace frees from the bondage or illusion finally,

    Blessed with self-realization and God-realization be;

    36

    Moksha - freedom from cycle of birth, rebirth be,

    All these four goals of life in balance have to be;

    37

    It realization of self as Supreme Self undoubtedly,

    It the experience of cosmos within one's self be;

    38

    It the very experience of the flow and fusion be,

    Of Shiv and Shakti energies in one's self do be;

    39

    It the experience of the union, the oneness be,

    The Ekatvam with the Universe – unquestionably.

    40

    Some paths shorter than others can certainly be,

    Some paths more arduous than others surely be;

    41

    Some path difficult to navigate can certainly be,

    Some path may not always but visible clearly be;

    42

    As all the rivers must lead to the sea eventually,

    All spiritual paths leading to the same goal finally;

    43

    And all of the variety of life are created certainly,

    By combination of the three Gunas undisputedly.

    THREE GUṆAS - MODES

    All the variety of species of life created be,

    By combination of three basic material energy;

    45

    These Guṇa modus operandi of material energy,

    They are called Tamo, Rajo and Sattva clearly;

    Tamo-guṇa associated with inertia, ignorance be,

    The Rajo-guṇa associated with passion, activity;

    47

    Sattva-guṇa associated with goodness, harmony,

    And all three of them associated with thinking truly.

    The term ‘guṇa’ in the hoary sacred text does be,

    As in the Mahabharat and Bhagwat Puran clearly.

    Term for the five elements, Mahabhutas, surely,

    Also five senses, five associated parts of body.

    Akasha or space, associated with sound and ear be,

    Vayu or air, associated with feeling and skin does be.

    51

    Tejas, Agni or fire, linked with appearance and eye be.

    Apas, Jala or water, associated with taste and tongue be.

    52

    Prithivi or earth, associated with all preceding Gunas be,

    As well as ‘guṇa gandha’ or smell and with the nose be.

    53 –

    1. Three Qualities

    All worldly qualities have been identified clearly,

    As three basic guṇas - tamas, rajas, sattva surely.

    Tamas darkness, Rajas passion, Sattva goodness be,

    Sattva, Rajas, Tamas together called three qualities.

    55

    Tamas quality is controlled by the Maha-Devi Kali,

    Rajas by Lakshmi Devi, sattva by Sarasvati Devi.

    ‘Tamas’ guṇa is inertia, ‘rajas’ but activity does be,

    ‘Sattva’ guṇa transcendence most certainly truly.

    Without all these three there is no physical entity,

    Not a single atom is free of these dimensions truly.

    They of certain static nature, vibrancy and energy,

    Without them nothing is together – breaks surely.

    You will be asleep all the time if its ‘tamas’ only,

    Just rajas - only relax; just sattva - you gone be.

    So all three qualities present in everything but be,

    It is just to what extent you mix these things finally.

    The nine days of Navaratri – prayer for the Devi,

    Classified they as to three basic qualities do be.

    We have the ability to alter guṇa levels willfully,

    Controlling them bringing awareness consciously.

    Tamas is just a state of inertia of but inactivity,

    The state of gratification of the five senses only.

    Tamas symbolized by darkness, ignorance be,

    Distracting humans from spiritual growth clearly.

    To reduce tamas avoid ‘Tamsik’ foods readily,

    As onions, garlic, – with natural steroids plainly.

    Meats, food: stale, processed, treated chemically,

    Excess emotion, sleep, eating, inactivity, passivity.

    Rajas is a state of the energy, change and activity,

    Binding to efforts ensuing longing, attachment truly.

    To cut rajas avoid rajasic food stimulant, fried, spicy,

    Extreme - exercise, work, music, thinking, desire truly.

    Sattva state of intelligence, balance, contentment be,

    Reduces rajas, tamas - so enlightenment possible be.

    Sattvic food, action begets positive thinking, bliss truly,

    Yogic practices create ‘sattva’ in the mind and body.

    Sattvic foods whole grains, pulses, lentils be surely,

    Fresh fruits, vegetables that grow above ground only.

    Practice of yoga, controlling desire and wants truly,

    With a yogic lifestyle will lead to ‘sattva’ undoubtedly.

    2. In Bhagwat Gita

    Tri-Guṇa appears in discourse of Krishna prominently,

    To Arjuna upon the battlefield of Kurukshetra clearly;

    That the backdrop for the Bhagwat Gita surely be,

    All three guṇas so held to delude the World clearly:

    त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैरेभिः सर्वमिदं जगत्।

    मोहितं नाभिजानाति मामेभ्यः परमव्ययम्॥७.१३॥

    World deluded by Three Guṇas does not know Me:

    Who beyond these Guṇas, imperishable does be.

    3. Sattva, Rajas & Tamas

    Darkness, Passion, Goodness – these qualities be,

    Darkness, night or obscurity for essence truly but be;
