Urban Legend Detectives Case 6 - Kyosuke Tsumiki

Urban Legend website ‘The Negative Spiral Staircase’ Bulletin Board

North Stairs♀: Yo, hey, what are you guys doing now? Hiro, Pink Kitty, Jason No. 28, Mad Gasser, and Camellia. Where has everyone gone? Hey, Jonah. Where are you now? What’s going to happen to this bulletin board?

    Continued from the previous volume

    We got something interesting.

Tachibana, who had finished reading Kawashima’s e-mail at an izakaya (Japanese-style pub) restaurant, said to her subordinate as she tucked her cell phone into her breast pocket.

Hey, Kobayashi. The guy named Keisuke Okudaira seems to be Tamae’s father.

    Tamae ... who is she?

    Kobayashi knitted his brows.

Have you forgotten this name? Tamae Okudaira, she got married and changed her last name that way. It’s Tamae Toride.

    "Tamae ... Toride!’’

Yeah, Okudaira’s daughter is the mother of Ryoichi Toride. In other words, Ryoichi is the grandson of Keisuke Okudaira.

Ryoichi Toride is the grandson of Keisuke Okudaira! ... Kobayashi’s mind went blank for a moment.

Okudaira is the one who spread the Seven Wonders At School throughout Japan. Why did he do it? And his grandson caused the Urban Legend Serial Murder Case. If so, the source of the madness is ... The gears in Kobayashi’s brain, which had once lost their ability to function due to his astonishment, turned around and sparked violently.

Perhaps I have made a terrible mistake.

Keisuke Okudaira, who spread the urban legend of Seven Wonders At School in the mid-1960s and then disappeared. There is no way that he could have nothing to do with the Urban Legend Serial Murder Case that his grandson has occurred more than half a century later.

If that’s the case, what does that mean?! ... What if Keisuke Okudaira, the grandfather, sowed the seeds, his daughter Tamae Toride nurtured them, and Ryoichi Toride, Okudaira’s grandson and Tamae’s son, has begun to harvest them? What if something passed down through three generations is the true motive for this case?!

    ... It wasn’t a doppelganger.

Yes, the source of Ryoichi Toride’s madness was not a doppelganger.

But then, what did Ryoichi’s shadow, alter ego, doppelganger, have to do with this case? What exactly was his role ...?

        - 0.5 -

You are not me, I am you. It’s not me who is hallucinating, it’s you. I am your ‘doppelganger’!

Black Friend was wearing white shoes, white cotton pants, and a white parka over a white shirt. He pulled the hood deeply over his head to hide his face, and as usual, he was all in white.

However, tears were streaming down his cheeks under the white hood covering his face.

White Friend staring at him was wearing black shoes, black pants, and a black open-necked shirt. In addition, he was wearing a black jacket with long sleeves over it and a black cloth like a bag without eyes or nose, which completely covered his face like a mask. As usual, he was all in black.

If this was going to happen, I should have never existed in the first place.

Black Friend began to speak slowly.

I am your hallucination, a product of your madness.

But I am what appeared and came into existence to save you from the world-shattering event you experienced on Samejima Island. I am a creation of your brain that seeks salvation.

You could not accept your experience at Samejima Island. Of course, you couldn’t. Such a fearless and horrific thing ... Even though it was for your survival, how could you accept the gruesome, ghastly crimes you committed?

In the rescued fishing boat, you desperately tried thinking it was a nightmare. You frantically wanted to convince yourself. It was not real but a hallucination, a delusion.

Yes, you told yourself. I never went to Samejima Island. I couldn’t have been there. You know, because I was with my mom all the time. I went to her hospital room every day to take care of my mom.

... Such a strong desire of yours produced me.

I remember the first time I met you, too.

Black Friend continued his story as if to prevent White Friend from attempting to interrupt him.

I saw the exhausted faces of you two when you and the woman arrived at the Sawarahama fishing port from Samejima Island. Onlookers gathered at the port to see you and Akemi Yanase.

    I was among them.

You spotted me in the crowd and stared at me in amazement. Your dead eyes have come back to life. I said to you in my mind, You are here. You have always been here.

That’s right, Black Friend, you didn’t go to Samejima Island! Because you’ve always been with your mom ...

White Friend couldn’t resist interrupting and said so, but Back Friend quietly shook his head horizontally.

Yes. Your mom, Tamae. You showed up every day to take care of Tamae, who had been hospitalized due to illness. Although you must have been on Samejima Island.

After being rescued from Samejima Island, Ryoichi Toride was
