Fit For Football - Joshua Garfukel
Introduction
That's all right! So, soccer season is rapidly approaching, and you want to make sure you're ready when tryouts begin. That sounds like a lot of fun! Soccer is one of the most well-known sports in history, and despite its origins on the European continent (where it is still referred to as "football rather than soccer, which can be confusing for those who are used to the term football referring to a game played with pigskin and slightly more violence than soccer), it has evolved into one of the great American pastimes, alongside baseball and basketball.
Soccer is not for the faint of heart, even though it is not quite as vicious as football. When you're racing across a field as fast as you can in an attempt to outrun the competition and take home the prize—in this case, the black and white checkered blur that you see rolling down the field towards your goalie as the other team tries to gain an advantage—it takes a lot of muscle and endurance to keep up. If you've always been a sports fan, this is probably nothing new to you; you already know how to stay in shape so that you're ready for whatever the playing field may throw at you. You probably make a concerted effort to eat healthily and exercise for a chunk of your day. There will be no shocks when you go onto that field; if you've ever played soccer before, you probably already know what you're getting yourself into and are wasting your time reading this report!
If, on the other hand, you are new to the game and physical exercise has never been your thing,
but you have chosen to give it a go, you will most likely need to spend some time getting in shape. If this fits you, don't create an inferiority complex just because you're worried about falling behind. If you're ready to put in a little work, you'll be able to catch up with your potential teammates in no time.
Of course, merely knowing that you'll need to put in some work to stay up with your competitors when tryouts roll around won't help you much; you'll need to know exactly WHAT you'll need to do to guarantee that you're as prepared as possible the first time you step out onto the field. (For the sake of argument, we'll suppose that the reason you want to prepare for soccer is so that you'll be ready when you go up against competition for the first time for a seat on the squad.) We recognize that this isn't always the case; some leagues don't need their players to audition, and if you happen to play in one of these leagues, it doesn't matter; the information we'll provide below will apply just as well to your scenario.)
• To get ready to play soccer, you'll need to develop a fitness routine centered on 10 main elements:
• To guarantee that your leg and arm muscles do not falter halfway through a game and send you sprawled on the field exhausted, you will need to increase their strength and endurance.
• You'll need to improve your cardiovascular conditioning, which will make
