About this ebook

The US has 12.3 million women-owned businesses, generating $1.8 trillion a year. Women are drawn to entrepreneurship because of necessity and/or desire to freely express and monetize themselves. Some women stumble into entrepreneurship, others are very intentional. Whatever the motivation, entrepreneurial women can run the risk of failing if they don’t have the right guidance, support and “entrepreneurial thinking.”

Smart Women – Wise Choices supports the budding entrepreneurial woman with step-by-step tools, insights and direction. Author Jackirae Sagouspe writes from the perspective of a woman who has successfully run her own businesses and also guided other women to thrive in their entrepreneurial pursuits. Smart Women – Wise Choices is for the courageous woman who wants to make quantum leaps in her business and who understands the power of support.

    Smart Women - Jackirae Sagouspe

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Larry Sagouspe, my husband and partner in all my entrepreneurial adventures.

Larry supports me with encouragement, confidence and positive energy to accomplish whatever project I decide to take on. His warmth and sense of humor make every day an exciting new day. After almost 50 years of marriage, Larry is still my muse, my confidante and best friend.

Pauline Shara, my college roommate and eternal friend.

As an only child, I had always wanted a sister. And that is what Pauline is. Pauline has always been there for me through the challenges and celebrations of life. We are both retired teachers (Pauline was even a school principal) and have re-invented ourselves through our entrepreneurial imagination, which draws to us new accomplishments and adventures. Even though we live in different parts of the country, we are never apart in spirit.

SophiaFalke, close friend, confidant, minister and entrepreneur.

Sophia has given me a sense of inner strength that allows me to continue to be creative and to look closely at new opportunities and make sound judgments. She is also a good friend, and we enjoy laughter and good conversation. Sophia has been instrumental in helping me stay focused on the creation of Smart Women – Wise Choices and directly responsible for it being published and released to the public.

    Janet Ryan, my cosmetologist.

We have a relationship based on our sense of humor, exchange of ideas, and entrepreneurial thinking. Janet has a craft, design and manufacturing career outside of her cosmetologist work. As an entrepreneur, Janet works directly with customers and retail organizations. She is definitely what I am referring to in this book as a Smart Woman making Wise Choices.

Linda Rawlins of Rawlins Design and Printing.

Linda is a true entrepreneur and has been more than simply my go-to printer and graphic design person. I admire her ability to run her own printing business in a male-dominated industry. Linda stays in tune with her ever-changing market and customers’ needs and responds by developing services and programs to meet them. Linda is always responsive and offers insights and inspiration for my creative projects and guides me in promoting them to my target markets.

Mrs. Appleby, my first true boss and entrepreneurial inspiration.

Mrs. Appleby and her family owned a historic restaurant in our town. We often ate there, so it seemed logical to go to her when I was looking for my first summer job. Mrs. Appleby created the position of set-up girl for me. Thanks to Mrs. Appleby’s support and recognition of my potential, I rose to positions of greater responsibility over the years when I was on summer break. I saw what it meant to be a business owner and all the responsibilities of personnel, inventory management, marketing, customer service and business excellence. My greatest reward was when I was a hostess and was able to work directly with customers. Not only did I develop interpersonal skills, I also learned about other business possibilities from my conversations with our customers. Thank you, Mrs. Appleby.

    Why I Wrote

    Smart Women - Wise Choices:

    An Introduction to Entrepreneurship

Hello, my name is Jackirae Sagouspe, as the owner of Touch Tomorrow Enterprises LLC., I am an entrepreneur. As the author of Smart Women - Wise Choices: An Introduction to Entrepreneurship, I have created an entrepreneurial product!

Upon reflection, the key to both of these roles was my becoming an entrepreneurial thinker leading to entrepreneurship! My journey to each of these life transitions seemed natural.

I graduated from college with majors in Speech/English and a minor in Theater Arts. This journey has taken me over thirty years of career transitions:

    • High school teacher (Speech Team Coach and Drama Teacher/Di- rector)

    • Transition from Public School teaching to consulting on public speaking for the local Better Business Bureau Seminar. I tailored seminars on Public Relations to promote Sales.

    • Independent marketing consultant

    • Acquired a manufacturing firm in the computer industry

    • Partnership in a firm for international import and export product distribution

    • Creation of an entrepreneurial business – Touch Tomorrow Enterprises LLC

I worked during my high school summers at a local, well-known restaurant which was owned by a woman. She was sophisticated, well organized, efficient, but was uncomfortable with greeting and talking to customers. Hence, how I moved from waiting tables to hostess.

I enrolled in a four-year college which was on the quarter system, thus allowing me to go home in the summer and return to my hostess position. This entire experience also taught me how to run a business and how to expand it. I was becoming an entrepreneurial thinker!

Why am I telling you all this? Because I have discovered over the years that it takes a certain mindset – a special way of thinking that sets the entrepreneur apart from every other type of business woman. It is called entrepreneurial thinking. And that is what will make you successful. Here is what some successful entrepreneurial women

have to say about their experiences.

PAULINE – Photographer, Designer, Manufacture, and Marketer

"When I retired from a very satisfying job in education 14 years ago, I decided I wanted to develop more of the right side of my brain, the creative side. I started with scrapbooking and then on to scrapbook type greeting cards. A friend invited me to share her craft booth and try selling my cards. I found I enjoyed this challenge. At first, the cards sold and then it seemed everyone was making their own cards. Once again, my friend encouraged me to follow my passion for photography. I started printing my photos, found excellent cardstock and embarked on a new approach. I found people responding positively to my cards AND buying them. I knew I found my place. I now have my own booth and have been very successful at selling my cards, expanded into gift packages and matted photos with pictures from around the world as well as my own back yard. This new direction has provided new meaning to find fun, unique and beautiful things to photograph when traveling. Now as an entrepreneur, I love the comments from return customers who tell me they have a hard time giving the cards away because they like them so much or they save them for vey special occasions. I continue to look forward to the challenges of having my own creative venture and sharing it at craft shows and with friend directly."

JANET – Cosmetologist, Independent Artist and Crafts Entrepreneur

"Owning and operating my own hair solon was one of the best experiences I have ever done. It taught me to stand up for myself and to keep on learning and trying new things. I learned that it was ok to be afraid, then finding out that the worst fear is being afraid. Learning how to network is the best tool available for any business to be successful. You learn to work smarter, not harder! I am currently enjoying my new roles of artist and entrepreneur – creating and producing product and selling directly to the customer and through local merchants. Smart Women—Wise Choices is not only empowering but timely! Brava Jacki!"

SOPHIA– Speaker, Author, Business Coach, Minister, Entrepreneur

"Entrepreneurship is for the courageous woman who wants to make quantum leaps in her professional and personal life. It’s also for the woman who understands the power of support, which is why I’m excited that Smart Women—Wise Choices has been added to the woman entrepreneur’s support network. I’ve been able to build a successful speaking and consulting business with the support of other smart women. As my business continues to grow and thrive, I’ve focused on showing other women how they can create the lives they love in the areas of their career/vocation, personal and professional relationships, health and physical vitality, and time and money freedom."

LYNDA – Owner/Entrepreneur – Graphic Design and Printing Company

"My father was the major influence in starting me to think like an entrepreneur. He started his own printing business and through, what I know to have been entrepreneurial
