Chapter 1
Prince Armitraya of Safalia
Looking out through the tall cathedral windows, set in the rugged old stones that had been hewn from the quarry in the next county, Prince Armitraya fell into reverie. What was it about horizons that always led him to wonder about his destiny?
The rocky ledges below the castle spilled out their treasures into cascading waterfalls, and the rich green hillsides flowed down into the valley in a bountiful and haphazard fashion, as if an embarrassment of riches had left them with little time for design and planning. And in its flashes of silvery light, glistening here and there between the trees, the river below reminded him that its cool refreshment was only minutes away, should he decide to put aside his duties and rush into its liquid embrace.
If only
he sighed. But he was not one to put aside his responsibilities so easily. That’s what comes of being born into a high position. Others had always projected a future upon him that he was not sure he would be equipped to handle. It made him feel as if he had to prove something to them… and even to himself. He never got to have real a childhood, with his life always pushed forward towards someone else’s dreams and visions, and never his own.
It was so unfair that those who didn’t know him assumed he lived a lazy life of luxury, and imagined that he was being given everything his heart desired. That was far from the truth! He was, in fact, just as much a slave as the lowest servant living in the townships that were ruled by his family. At least that’s how he felt. And he envied the travelling merchants who came and went, at their own convenience, from town to town and to places far beyond, to new worlds he could scarcely imagine.
He wondered how things might change, given that he was approaching his sixteenth birthday. He would soon be considered a young man, fit to govern at least a small part of his own life. He would happily test himself with a young man’s challenges and learn about his strengths and weaknesses in the process. But even more exciting, The Coming of Age Initiation would soon confer upon him the honour of being called ‘a man’.
He felt a little anxious about it sometimes, and a queasy feeling would come into his stomach when he imagined what he may be required to do once he was considered ‘a man’, but it was always said that no challenge would be given to anyone that was beyond their knowledge and ability.
In spite of everything, he was learning to trust himself. He was learning that no matter what may confront him, he is capable and courageous. All he had to do was to follow his inner knowing, pass through the actual steps of the Initiation Ceremony, and do his best. He would know more after the ceremony.
The crisp tapping of footsteps on marble floors quickly brought him back to the present moment. He turned to see a Footman approaching, carrying his sheathed sword and slightly bowing.
Here it is Young Sir, we have had it cleaned and polished, all ready for your Ceremony tomorrow.
Thank you. That will be all.
He dismissed the footman swiftly, barely making eye contact. It’s not that he wasn’t friendly, it’s just that Armitraya was a little self-conscious and shy, and he liked his own company. He didn’t have many friends, but his own imagination provided enough fertile soil for his deep thoughts and his lofty dreams.
He was in many ways a creature balanced between two worlds–the outer world with its dreary duties and the inner world of his imagination, which he preferred.
Chapter 2
The Sword of Valour
Armitraya took hold of the hilt of his beloved sword and unsheathed it, marvelling at the smooth finish of the metal and the way
