About this ebook

Hedgehog shifter, Irwin Chance was not the type to go out to parties, of any kind. A self-confessed introvert with anxiety disorders, he was happy to stay at home, work on his Youtube channel and counsel people from the safety of his home. But Irwin had friends, three of them to be exact, and one of them had gotten him a ticket to the biggest party of the year. Irwin told himself it would be okay - he could livestream the event for his viewers and give them tips along the way. But then Sammy said he'd arrange Irwin's costume... things went downhill from there.

Kolton with a K, was a tiger shifter who totally understood the only way to get anyone to respect him was to show he was powerful at all times. Going to the biggest party of the year was expected of him, although it would've helped if he could remember the name of his date. But when he catches a hint of the most amazing scent in the entire world, his tiger sprung to life and Kolton knew his mate was near. Or so he thought.
Too bad, Kolton got the wrong guy.

Insults fly, some introspection is required, and when a tiger mom gets in on the act, Kolton's the one wishing he'd stayed home. But the Fates don't like being ignored, and now all Kolton has to do is work out how to make things right with a certain hedgehog shifter... it would help if he'd stop putting his foot in his mouth.

Word count: 35,000. Irwin's story is one of four books written by four different authors in the Nocturne Bay universe. They can be read in any order and each story does work as a standalone.

Hi My name is Lisa Oliver and welcome to my Author page. After spending years writing non-fiction books, the lure of fiction and the men in my head finally had me sitting down and writing The Reluctant Wolf, an M/M paranormal erotic romance in November 2013. Since that time I have written one hundred titles including the Cloverleah Pack series, the Bound and Bonded series, Alpha and Omega series, Stockton Wolves series, The Hellhound Collar series, The Gods Made Me Do It series and many more. All of my books are M/M (or M/M/M) come with a guaranteed HEA and absolutely no cheating. I strongly believe in the power of love - and all of my books are based on the true mate trope. However, for me, insta-lust does not equal insta-love and all of my books tell of the journey my main characters need to go through to reach that state of being in love with someone special. Some of my books can be read as standalone, but in cases like the Cloverleah series you get a good idea of the back stories of secondary characters by reading the books in order. I love to hear from all of my readers so please feel free to catch up with me on Facebook, Twitter or through my blog.

    Author’s Note

I did promise my readers I wouldn’t start any new series until I’d tidied up some of my older ones, lol. But when some of my author friends started talking about a collab series, I knew I had to be a part of it.

Nocturne Bay stems from the idea of what would happen if four good friends all went to the same party one night, and all met their Fated Mates. So, you will notice that the beginning of all four of the first books in the series all start roughly the same way. But then, of course, as our lovely characters branch off with their various mates, they share their adventures in their own titles.

All four titles are being released on the same day in our world too, so be sure to check out the other books when you’ve finished this one.

    Thank you,

    Lisa xx

    Dedication

To my collaboration partners – Dani, Arden, and Aja – thank you for making this project fun.

To Jon – thank you for highlighting those pesky repeated words for me.

To Phil and Barry for pushing me when I wanted to do something else, and

To all of you, my wonderful readers, who fall in love with my characters as quickly as I do – I adore you.

    Chapter One

It should be noted, by anyone who cared, that Irwin Chance didn’t like to go out. However, having wonderfully adorable pushy friends meant that sometimes it was inevitable, which is why he found himself at their local café, watching with concern as Sammy Love was getting more and more ‘bouncy’. The occasion was a discussion on costumes, or rather, what the four friends were going to be wearing for the grand opening of Underground, the newest gay paranormal club in Nocturne Bay.

Okay, so we’ve decided that Chester will go as Prince Charming.

Chester Charming rolled his eyes and did a spot of huffing. I don’t know how I let you talk me into this stuff. Yeah, Prince Charming is cool and all, but I don’t know about the tights.

Irwin eyed his friend’s legs. I think he’d look good in tights. Sammy was all Oh shush, flapping his hand. It’s going to be fabulous. Besides, I think the sword more than makes up for the tights.

    It’s made of rubber!

But a very convincing rubber. Sammy made another shushing sound and then announced, And I will be a bandit.

Irwin snorted. A bandit? What kind of bandit?

That’s not important, but believe me, it’ll be…

Fabulous? Yeah, you said. Chester sighed. What did you say you were going as?

Oh, me. Irwin sat straighter and cleared his throat. Well, I was thinking that…

Oh, don’t worry. Why is Sammy interrupting me? I have the perfect costume for you!

No. Irwin knew his eyes were probably about to fall out, but he put as much force into his refusal as possible.

But Sammy was on a roll. It will be delivered the afternoon before the party.

Irwin gulped, and then swallowed hard. There was no way he could hide the horror on his face. What did you do? Oh, my gods. Irwin’s head was filled with visions of scanty lace and sparkles.

It’s a surprise, but I promise, you’re going to love it.

Slumping back in his seat, Irwin tried to work out just how bad a Sammy costume might be. It might not be that bad, he reasoned. Tights, maybe. I might have to handle a sword. I could wear a coat…

And what about you? Sammy had turned his focus to Ryo, the fourth member of their group. Irwin felt a sense of fellowship with the little mouse shifter – Ryo was as shy as he was pretty, and he was very pretty. Now, faced with Sammy’s excitement, Irwin watched Ryo try and shrink in his seat.

Well, I, uh, I figured I’d just… Ryo was looking for an escape. Can we talk about this later? I really should go back to work.

You should go as Snow White. Just looking at Ryo made that obvious to Irwin. I mean, if Chester is going as Prince Charming, it only makes sense.

    That’s Cinderella, Ryo said firmly.

Huh? Irwin loved his friend, but that didn’t mean he always understood him.

Cinderella was with Prince Charming. Snow White’s dude is just called The Prince.

What about Sleeping Beauty? Chester suggested.

    Prince Phillip.

Irwin shrugged. Okay, then go as Cinderella.

With that gorgeous blond hair? Sammy scoffed. No way. He should totally go as Rapunzel.

Hmm, that’s an idea. Irwin could see Ryo as Rapunzel. He did have the most amazing hair that went all the way down to his butt already, so it’s not as though he’d have to wear a wig.

Why am I the only one wearing a dress? Ryo asked.

Uh, because you love that stuff? Chester chimed in. Dresses, tiaras, glitter.

Sparkles, Irwin said quickly. Glitter was a menace. Irwin had only one experience with the wretched stuff, but it’d taken him a week to get it out of his hair. It doesn’t have to be glitter. It just has to sparkle.

Keep your voice down, Ryo hissed. Look I just don’t think it’s a good idea. That’s all.

It’s a costume party. Sammy struck a pose with his blue ceramic mug. No one is going to care.

I’ll go as Prince Charming, Ryo offered. That way, Chester doesn’t have to wear tights. I don’t even mind the fake sword.

No way. Chester had folded his arms and was shaking his head. I’ve already called dibs.

You just said… Was Ryo feeling as desperate as Irwin was at the idea of a ‘Sammy Costume?’ And yes, the term deserved capital letters.

Dibs. Well, Chester was standing firm.

And besides, I already have your costume ready to go, Sammy took a sip of his drink. You’ll get it the same time as everyone else.

Hang on. Irwin had a sudden feeling he was missing something. Wait, wait, wait. He scooted forward in his chair. Why does everyone else get to know what costumes they’re wearing?

Sammy shrugged. The little squirrel actually shrugged, like Irwin’s concerns weren’t important. Because you’d say no if I told you.

I knew it. I’m saying no now!

Too late, it’s non-refundable. Sammy was cackling hard enough, he’d fall off his seat if he kept it up. Oh, this is going to be so much fun.

I don’t think so, and from the faces of his friends, Irwin wasn’t the only one thinking it. Ryo, bless his heart, tried one more time.

    I really don’t…

Non-refundable. Sammy was still chuckling. Relax. I promise you won’t be the only one there in a dress.

Oh dear, poor Ryo. No one will look twice. Irwin smiled at his friend and thought he saw Ryo relax. Until Sammy opened his mouth again.

Oh, they’re definitely going to look twice. In fact, they won’t be able to take their eyes off him. He elbowed Chester in his arm, causing him to spill his drink. Isn’t that right, Ches?

Don’t call me that. Chester was dabbing at the dark stains on his shirt with a napkin. But as much as it pains me to say it, yes, you’re right. He looked up at Ryo. Wear the dress, Ry.

Irwin knew there was a part deep in Ryo’s sensitive soul that really wanted a dress too. Wear the dress. He nodded. It’s a masquerade, a chance to be whatever you want to be.

Exactly! Sammy banged his fist on the table, making everything on it jump. So, if you can be anything you want, why not be…

Fabulous, Irwin echoed his friends. I just wish I knew what brand of fabulous Sammy has planned for me.

The walk back to Irwin’s apartment didn’t take long. Irwin probably should’ve appreciated the fresh air on his face and the fact it wasn’t raining, but his mind kept churning through the conversation at the coffee shop. Sammy was a dear friend, who had fantastic fashion sense. He owned a shop downtown called ‘Oh La La Cherie.’ Irwin had wandered past it a few times, when it was closed – and there was absolutely no chance Sammy might be there. The window displays were always ‘fabulous,’ but Irwin shuddered at the thought of actually wearing anything Sammy sold.

It will be all right, he told himself firmly. Sammy was one of his best friends, and Irwin was sure he’d shared with him more than once how he always dreamed of dressing up like Sherlock Holmes. Of course.

Irwin nimbly stepped around a larger figure busy on his phone. Most people were taller than him, and, to Irwin’s chagrin, usually fitter looking too. At five foot five, Irwin didn’t hit the average male height for humans or paranormals, and while he might have a bit of softness around his belly, Irwin was rather proud of his butt. He had the best jiggle among his friends.

So, there is no way Sammy’s going to dress me in anything outlandish. He knows I love Sherlock Holmes, and the others are all wearing outfits that cover all the important bits, so it’s silly to think mine will be any different.

Comforted, Irwin had a positive spring in his step as he bounced up the stairs to his apartment. He had half an hour to
