World Facts:
There are seven continents and five oceans on our planet.
The seven continents on our planet are: Africa, Asia, Antarctica, Europa,
North America, South America, Oceania/Australia.
Historically, there are four named ocean basins: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic.
However, most countries - including the United States - now recognize the Southern (Antarctic) as the fifth ocean basin.
There are 195 countries in the world today. This total comprises 193 countries that are member states of the United Nations and 2 countries that are non-member observer states: the Holy See and the State of Palestine.
Not included in this total count of 195 countries are:
Taiwan - the United Nations considers it represented by the People's Republic of China
The Cook Islands and Niue, both states in free association with New Zealand which are members of several UN specialized agencies and have been recognized full treaty-making capacity
, but are neither member states nor non-member observer states.
Dependencies (or dependent territories, dependent areas, dependencies) and Areas of Special Sovereignty (autonomous territories)
Other countries recognized by the United Nations as not being self-governing
How the countries are divided in the world:
54 countries are in Africa,
48 countries are in Asia,
50 countries are in Europe,
12 countries are in South America,
14 countries are in Oceania,
23 countries are in Northern America and the Caribbean.

There are 54 countries in Africa - and 9 dependent territories. More than 1.3 billion people live on the African continent. This means about 15% of the world's total population live in Africa.
The current population of Africa is 1,361,332,423.
The total land area is 29,648,481 Km² (11,447,338 sq. miles)
The population density in Africa is 45 per km² (117 people per mi²).
Largest Country: Algeria
The most populous country in Africa, however, is Nigeria.
Largest City: Lagos in Nigeria.
Smallest Country: Seychelles, which is an archipelago (nation of islands) in the Indian Ocean. On the African mainland, the smallest country is The Gambia.
Biggest Island: Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world - after Greenland, New Guinea and Borneo.
Longest River: Nile (6,852 km/ 4,258 miles). The Nile is the longest river in the world and passes through eleven countries.
Highest Mountain: Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
