    PREFACE

There are many paths in a Christian’s life. There are paths of prayer, paths of dedication, and paths that lead to tests and trials. Many of the paths that we must travel are dark, slippery and full of disappointment. Yet, you will see from the experiences that I share with you that each path can lead to a level of growth and victory.

When we are in treacherous places, we must learn to hold firm to that rock which is Christ. We must learn to depend on Him and trust Him when there is seemingly no answer, as we wonder who God is and where He is.

We must ask ourselves the question, "How well do we know God?" It is a question that no one can adequately answer, because we don’t know, and cannot imagine how great God is. We know from the Bible that God is beyond comprehension or understanding. Paul said, "That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and in the fellowship of His sufferings being made conformable to His death" (Phil. 3:10 KJV). This indicates that knowing God is possible.

As I search for God and go to heights and depths that are beyond my intellectual capacity, my spirit seems to demand more. I have to wonder how far I can go. Is there a point of attaining all that God has for me? The answer is most likely no. We will never know Him as He is in this lifetime.

There are questions in the pursuit of knowing God. Who on earth has found out all there is to know about God? What do others know about him that I don’t know? Can we all understand Him on the same level? How deep is that knowledge alone? Often our heart longs to go where He is in His Glory so we can understand Him to the fullest. Ephesians 2:7 NKJV says: That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

As you read, may you be encouraged to begin a new prayer life that will be more than a habit or a necessity when there are problems in your life. May you allow God to call you to a similar experience of growing in Him and knowing Him, in ways you have never experienced before as He did for me.

Certain situations challenged me to rise at least two hours before time to go to work and sit in a dark quiet place. There, I began to call on Him to purify my life, cleanse my mind, and to teach me how to be real with Him. In a closer walk, He may require you to reveal all of your secret failures to Him.

As you do this, you will develop a more intimate relationship with Him that will start you on a road to a greater victory than ever before. He may reveal to you that no matter where you are now, there is always more in God.

As I share the many ways in which God has worked in people’s lives to train, develop character and to purify the mind; I trust that you will find Him in a new and comforting way that generates new growth in your relationship with Him. During this time, may He show you victory, healing, and success as He did for my life and the people who have allowed me to share in their lives.

    INTRODUCTION

As you read my life story of prayers and miracles in the last few chapters of this book, you will be experiencing extraordinary visions and supernatural visitations. The knowledge I have gained through the past 55 years from pastors, prophecy teachers, intense study, and what God spoke to me during a recent illness, which I have woven together for this book and is based on what I experienced.

I was in the hospital for several weeks, followed by rehab centers for several months. Throughout my stay there, many things happened to help me understand God’s plan much better. God began speaking to me about Creation, from eternity past through eternity future.

His encounters took place while I was going through surgery. I was asleep, but my spirit is alert. I had several encounters with God. I experienced His Presence and talked with Him.

I also experienced the black darkness of Satan’s kingdom as he made a horrendous attack on my faith from this. These encounters seemed to happen when my heart had stopped and it did many times, before they put the pacemaker in.

I want to help those who are interested, to understand that it is extremely important that we are aware of the enemy who will do anything to destroy you and your faith. Nothing is easy when you are working for God. We have an enemy to fight all along the way.

A good scripture to put into practice during your walk with God is, Nehemiah 4:17 KJV, which says to do your work with one hand while having a sword in the other hand. I pray that you will learn many truths from this presentation.

    The Beginning

As the story of my life of many miracles unfolds, my prayer is those of you who are fhhacing difficult situations in your life, family, or church will be able to glean from my experiences.

In Bellville, Pennsylvania in 1897 there was a young man by the name of Rufus Zook Byler born to Abiah J. and Lydia Byler. My dad, R.Z. Byler, was raised in a Mennonite Home and community.

Far removed from us today, this primitive way of life featured plain clothes, horse-drawn buggies, wood stoves, washboards, and wells along with strict moral standards of that era. Some years before, my dad’s mother, Lydia Zook Byler, died on Christmas day as she was departing this life to take up a new residence with Jesus, she said, Look! pointing toward the window. There is Jesus and my baby. The baby had died very young.

After her death, his dad married again and things were not the same. it seems the step mom was a task master and even though my papa was a very hard steady worker it was really hard for him. As he was always a very spirited and zealous man might have had some baring in it.

While working in his family’s wheat field as a young teenager in Pennsylvania, the Lord called my dad to repentance. He knelt at a stump in the middle of the field and gave his heart to the Lord.

When my papa was a young man, he heard about the Pentecostal movement which was relatively new to the United States. This movement had manifested in a group of people in a storefront on Azusa Street in California in the early 1900’s. These people had come together to pray and during this time; the Holy Spirit began to manifest Himself to them. Some people were given sermons, others given healings, and some would express emotions given by the Holy Spirit.

Over time, a denomination was formed and in 1914, a group of ministers came together to form what we now know as the Assemblies of God. Ever since that time, missions have been a huge part of this fellowship. Now, around the world, the Assemblies of God has grown to 67,000,000 members. This is what the power of the Holy Spirit can do through people who surrender all to God.

One day while working in the fields with his brother Levi, a thunderstorm rolled in. They stood under a large tree for shelter and Levi was struck by lightning and instantly killed.

After his brother’s death, my papa, as we called him, more fervently sought God and began his pursuit in the Pentecostal movement. As Papa was searching for a deeper experience with God, he read of Jesus praying in the mountains.

He went up on a mountain in his area and had an encounter that was different than anything he had experienced before. He came down from the mountain after a few days and told his pastor and his daddy about his encounter with God. However, they were not ready to believe what he was telling them about his experience.

Shortly after, in 1918, when he was approximately 20 years old, he heard about the Assemblies of God. He began his pursuit of the new church denomination and ended up at the headquarters in Arkansas.

There, he met Woodworth Etta, a great revivalist at that time. He asked her how to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. She instructed him to go to an upstairs room and to stay there until he received the baptism. Three days later and fasting during that time, he returned from that room full of the Holy Spirit and fire.

After that, Woodworth Etta paired him with another young evangelist. They were sent to Tuscaloosa, Alabama and from there to Clanton, Alabama.

During their time of ministry in Alabama, many people were saved and filled with the baptism in the Holy Spirit. He helped build many churches across Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. My mother learned about Christ through his ministry and after her conversion, they fell in love and were married. God later blessed them with four children.

About 1919, when my dad launched out and held his first revival in Alabama, the first place my dad preached after coming to Clanton, Alabama was in old Macedonia Baptist church. However, they soon asked him to leave because they did not believe in the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. With his new converts he built his first church and named it New Hope, organized it in the Assemblies of God, and soon went on to two other areas nearby and established churches.

He did all of this with very little money but the people had a mind to work. The only support he and mom had come from the church. It was in the form of an occasional chicken or if someone killed a hog we might get a piece of meat, but never money. dad always had a garden and raised animals for meat. Even in times of need, we helped others. We were a very giving family and I believe that is the reason why we were never without the necessities of life.

My mother’s sister Lue Smith opened her home and they began what was called a protracted meeting. After they got enough members she suggested we build a church. Lue would provide the land and timber and a man in the congregation offered timber also. The community came together and built the church. Dad would oversee the work since he had carpentry skills.

Because the people were united they agreed to call the church New Harmony. At the end of my parents’ lives they were both buried there in the church yard
