    Author’s Introduction

The passion behind this book of meditations

I have been a personal prayer minister for almost 20 years; the following occurrence is why I am sharing my meditations. The following short stories come from those with whom I pray.

I proceeded down the four steps to the main floor of the sanctuary with God blessing every step and made my right-hand turn to the prayer corner. My thoughts were not as holy or contemplative as they should have been. Over the last two weeks, I did not have a visitor in the prayer corner at any service. This would not be the case this morning.

I did, however, begin a ritual of asking for God’s purity in thought as I sat in the corner, smiling at the members of the congregation returning to their pews after the serving of the Eucharist. My eyes were closed, deep in meditation, when I felt the presence of a few people. I saw before me a family of four, both the father and mother had tears in their eyes, and the two young lads, I guessed the ages to be eleven and fourteen, looked at me very apprehensively.

I asked them to be seated and offered God’s blessing to them on this Sunday morning, as was my usual custom. I then asked the all-important question. How can I bring us closer to Jesus Christ this morning? The father stammered something incomprehensible and began to wipe tears from his eyes. Mother offered that their older son, Jay, had just tested positive for fatal disease. I placed both boys on opposite knees and wrapped my arms around Mom and Pop; making us united in our grief this morning. The boys sat quietly on my lap, while both parents wept quietly. I began by naming each of them as God’s children.

I began: Gracious Father, we are humbled by your presence in our daily lives. We rejoice that you care for each of us as your beloved children. Your son and daughter have brought Jay to our prayer corner this morning, fearing the results of recent medical tests. We know that Jay is one of your favorite children. We ask that you hold him and his family closer to your loving breast as they confront this tragic news. As a congregation, we lift Jay into your care, so that he may continue learning and being a devoted son, steadfast in his desire to complete his mission and serve you as a devout Christian. We ask this in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, Your Son.

We hugged each other; I gave a special embrace to Jay, whispering that God loves him and protects him from all evil in the world. He hugged me back. I was crest-fallen by this news; I did not know this family well; they were new members of our Episcopal family.

No sooner had this family left, when a middle age man sat in front of me, gave me a big hug, and said, I know I am seeking God’s help from the right person. I asked him, How can I bring us closer to Jesus Christ this morning? He began, I know you are the right person, because you have experienced what I am going through. I am stuck! I do not know how to continue!

Richard, what is the problem; you know God provides.

Russ, I am stuck; I have a block and cannot schedule the appointment to defend my thesis to my advisors. I have worked for two years on it, but I am not sure now if I can successfully defend it.

I remember how happy you were when your thesis on Crimea was accepted; why doubt yourself now; God is always on your side.

Yes, I know, but I am so unsure of my ability to answer my panel’s questions.

Richard; you are the expert on your subject. Your team is following your guidance; they are learning from you. You researched and wrote what is contained within those pages. You did this with all the assistance and support of God. Do you really think that He will abandon you now? Let’s pray together.

"Mother of all; Your son Richard has suffered a temporary
