      INTRODUCTION

      T h is story is about how I was dumped by three different women. Two were married to me and one was a summer romance. I don’t call them the B word just because they left me. But because of the way they did it.

      I’ve had several relationships with women that didn’t work out, but I don’t grace them with the B word. These women include Lisa, who I invited to London, England, on a business trip. We spent three days at a five-star hotel; being chauffeured around fashionable Chelsea and Hyde Park in vintage Rolls Royces, dancing at the Hippodrome; and shopping at Harrods. Although she enjoyed the romance, she wanted to refrain from sex. My ego was shattered, but I had to respect her candor; therefore, she is not a bitch.

      No, these three women I am about to expose to you are in a league of their own. These women are Black, White and Asian. Their ages are twenty, twenty-one, and thirty-six. They dumped me in the most bizarre places and at the most depressing moments. At the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France; in bed on our first wedding anniversary; on the couch of the marriage counselor. I think that at the end of each chapter, the sheer gall of these women will make your lips press together to the inevitable point of blurbing out the word Bitch!

      BITCH NUMBER ONE:

      DORNA

      M y first wife was Filipino and twenty years old when we married in July 1989. I was twenty-eight. We thought we were so in love and wanted to have a grand wedding to celebrate our new beginning. The plans sort of grew and grew into a sit down dinner of 536 people for the reception in the Grand Ballroom of the Chicago Hyatt Regency. The wedding party had no less than thirty friends and relatives participating in a two hour, high mass, Catholic wedding.

      At the reception, we had a four-piece chamber music group in the anteroom and a twelve-piece orchestra for the ballroom. Our first dance was to South Pacific’s Some Enchanted Evening. We chose this ballad because it expressed how we met in Chicago only eight months before; we were at a dance when Dorna and I caught ourselves smiling at each other across the crowded room. We were inseparable thereafter. I proposed within a month and the seven-month engagement was spent planning the elaborate gala.

      I guess you are wondering who paid for this celebration of bliss? Since Dorna’s family didn’t have the money and I was doing well as a general contractor with some money in the bank, I was more than happy to pay for the show. STUPID!

      There we are married with the rest of our lives before us. The first year, as they say, is the hardest; so I was prepared for a roller coaster ride, but I was optimistic. I come from a family where marriage is a serious commitment and you had better be ready to compromise, negotiate, and share your feelings. My parents have been married for forty-seven years and their example of love is one of which I am proud. Dorna’s family is also to be respected. My mother-in-law and father-in-law are happily married. I thought that such a foundation would provide an excellent chance for us to have a loving marriage.

      Dorna was doing well in college and I was working hard at the office. I knew she had to dedicate herself to her accounting studies, but I was hoping she would also find time to enjoy socializing with my business colleagues. In the competitive but lucrative construction world, I had to buy $2,500.00 tables at black-tie dinners, sponsor and host golf outings, or entertain potential clients at out-of-town conventions. Dorna wasn’t comfortable with the role of being the interested hostess. One night we had a cocktail party at our home and Dorna wouldn’t come out of the kitchen for the duration of the party.

      I could understand that she didn’t feel comfortable in my business life, but she began shying away from activities that only involved the two of us. Every Christmas holiday, I usually go to the Colorado Rockies to ski until the New Year. It’s a great vacation to ski all week in the beauty of the fresh, snow covered mountains. I thought Dorna was excited. She had never skied before, but said she was looking forward to the trip, especially the apres ski with the ‘hot toddies.’ Dorna and I went shopping, buying her ski outfits, boots, skis, and accessories for the highly anticipated vacation.
