    CHAPTER 1

    Business Administration

The term business administration is self-explanatory. It involves administering a said business.

The term administration comes with a definitive entity usually called the corporation or company.

When we mean business, it is most probably a functioning, viable, and for-profit entity, although from the technical point of view, administrating is applicable to any form of entity even if it is a family, a relation, or a nonprofit organization. A business, like any other living object, has its boundaries, its features, its systems, its objectives, and most importantly, its own life cycle. No matter what the perspective is when viewing things or what attitudes toward certain activities are, a human being is obliged to show some administrative skills throughout his entire life, either at the personal level or at the professional level.

Management comes as the major, if not the ultimate and most important, factor when it comes to the administration of a business. The way you create and develop steps to achieve certain objectives represents what we call your management style!

This is a simplified description of such a complicated issue. A lot of researchers, writers, and critics have spent much time evaluating and analyzing this very vital aspect of the business administration process, which is called management.

I have been interested in the word control. One of my professors once told me, Mohammed, it is better to manage things rather trying to control them, because while managing, most of the items are within your reach. On the contrary, if you try to control, the majority of items are unfortunately out of your hands.

Theoretically speaking, the science of business administration consists of other subjects, such as marketing, economics, finance, statistics, human resources, advertising, information technology, logistics, etc.

I have decided to choose marketing and management as my areas of concern in this book and will combine them together to create a new formula called markiloment. This is a simple yet very assertive and precise term for a number of reasons. Number one: I believe that these two subjects can solve most of our problems either on the personal level or the corporate level. Number two: they are both part of the business studies context, so we are not far from the academic field. Number three: the said sciences have always been treated separately, so the time has come to combine and scale the effect of the mix. Number four: this is only the beginning of the process, and I am sure many others will follow and produce better results.

It is all about formulas and trial and error, and that’s how mankind progresses.

Simplicity is beauty! Sometimes this concept applies to business as well. Being sophisticated is not really necessary for you to reach your goals. The corporate goals are to be achieved by humans. Average people work hard in order to reach the company’s objectives and goals. If you look around you, the discoveries are endless either in the animal world or the plants world; they breathe and need oxygen exactly like humans, so studying their behavior can help researchers and give them a mine of solutions for their problems. Companies need to breathe like a living cell. They have their vibes and drawbacks, but we have to be sure they are always in good condition.

Technique refers to the way we do things. We follow steps and use tools we associate output to exact behavior to get results.

Adapt and influence process is what we use. I remember using a similar approach when doing summer training during university days back in 1989 at Brown and Root, Houston, Texas. When visiting the engineering site, our subcontractors were digging one hundred twenty feet under Houston ship channel to lay the northwest pipeline that will deliver potable water to the city of Houston. The technique used underneath was called ribs and lagging—very similar! It’s a small world.

As we have previously mentioned, we are dealing with two living concepts called marketing and management. We have two questions to answer: Are we managing our marketing process, or we are trying to do well in positioning our marketing efforts?

This simple efficient and effective chart tells it clearly.

    P3.jpg

Marketing and management are simply the two nuclei of any living entity. Ancient Egyptians were the first to tell about how to manage things, yet America outshines all other countries in the field of marketing.

What we study fills a void called products and services. Providing a service varies a bit from creating and developing a product, but services have one common attribute—that of fulfilling a need at the highest level of quality along with the lowest price possible, and that is what we all aim for.

Usually in such books the focus is always shifted toward equations, charts, illustrations, and tables. Fortunately since this is a new approach, photographs will be used as the magic of photos can’t be overrated. You freeze the time in a second, a unique moment, not like after or before. A good photographer can take the viewer to places he will never reach, fly him to exotic destinations, bring forth terrific memories, and enhance the vision and imagination. Associating photos to paparazzis only is a sorry thing. In life there is no absolute evil or good.

Of all styles, objects, combinations, blends, mixes, sets, formulas, chemistries, drawings, anatomies, and fabrications available, we have decided to eliminate the above from the entire book and base it only on seven formulas, judged and chosen based on their practicality, functionality, feasibility, and personal applicability.

Some of these have been tested successfully either on a small, medium, or large scale.

We will let others continue to solve the mysteries of our matrix, which will be shown later on.

    CHAPTER 2

    Products and Services

This way or the highway, either you produce a product or you provide a service, or you could do both. Since at an early age, humans are in desperate need to fulfill their wants. They started using what has been found around their environment, from tree branches to stones, you name it. Women were the early birds of providing service to their families, by cooking food and sewing animal leather to a make simple covers to the bodies.

Evolution starts and ends, landing us to high-tech satellites and delivering services to the outside hemisphere surrounding earth. Products are the tangible outcome of a series of activities to deliver what fills the gap of living and nonliving objects. What we consume easily against cash, credit and barter deals from retail outlets or through the Internet came from a process that starts with a raw material using machinery and human effort coupled with an order to create what is called the product.

Products vary from a very simple pencils or needles to an airplane or a huge machinery. Same rules apply at this book. We try as much as we can to simplify things without being too shallow yet have in-depth analysis based on proven real-life examples. We will try to categorize although I am not that fan of preboxing stuff but it helps to manage things.
