    It’s so hard to begin when it comes to listing the great attributes of this truly unique city on the sea.

    It’s the oldest city in France, settled in ancient times by the Greeks. Marseille was already 500 years old when Caesar appeared at the city walls to lay siege in 49 B.C.

    More recently, in the 20th Century, when immigrants from Algeria and other colonials from the remnant of the French Empire overseas started to swarm here, the city became quite unique in France because it was so culturally, psychologically and ethnically different from the rest of the country. Crime also soared as the city took on an image of grittiness and danger. But for all its ups and downs—and it’s had plenty of both—Marseille has nonetheless remained a world-class city.
