Dale Heil

Dale Heil grew up on a cattle ranch near Boulder Colorado. Despite his Christian upbringing, he became disobedient and unruly in his teens and early twenties. After many confrontations with law enforcement he ended up in prison in his mid-twenties with a lengthy sentence. Remembering his upbringing he turned to the Lord and truly dedicated his life to God. After being born again, he became a serious student of God's Word and searched through the scriptures many hours each day. After a few years he began to teach bible studies to other inmates, and had a very productive ministry on the inside called "Spirit and life". Then one day God spoke to him and told him to write down everything that He had taught him over the years. He soon began to do so, and after being released from prison became the author of several books. His first book, "Spirit and Life", is named after his ministry in prison. He is also the author of, "The Making of a man of Faith", "The Threefold Cord of Giving, Prayer, and Fasting", and "God's Sovereign Reign over His Creation". He is now a cattle rancher in Meeker Colorado, teaches bible studies, and continues to write down everything that God has taught him.

    FOREWORD

    Dale Heil is a man

of God, led by the Holy Spirit to share from the scriptures the Word given to him for the bible studies that are a big part of his ministry. Much of this took place in prison. Many have given their hearts to God because of his love for God and desire to share what God has given him.

I have known Dale all of his life because he is my nephew. I have seen the transformation of his life of sin to his life of godliness. Only by the grace of God are we saved through our faith in him.

    INTRODUCTION

    In the first half of

Matthew chapter six Jesus teaches on the importance of giving, prayer, and fasting. All three of these things can and should be a faithful part of every Christian’s life. However, they are the three things that are often the most neglected by many of God’s people. I have come to this conclusion after attending hundreds of bible studies and church services, and fellowshipping with countless Christian people over the last 30 years.

I believe that the reason these three things are so often neglected is because, of their importance, they come under heavy spiritual attack. We do have an enemy that does not want us to grow close to God or be blessed by him.

I have been very fortunate to have had close personal friends that have practiced one or more of these things faithfully, and through their examples added them to my lifestyle. There are great blessings and benefits that come as a result of practicing each of these things. Those who practice all three become spiritually strong, and are like the threefold rope (that the scriptures speak of) that is not easily broken. Each of the three folds strengthens the rope. A threefold rope is many times stronger than a single or double cord rope.

The purpose of this book is to do an in-depth teaching on each of these subjects. Each teaching is filled with examples from both the Old and New Testaments in great detail; and shows how, when, and why, we should practice each of these three things. They also reveal the blessings and benefits that follow believers that observe and do them, and the consequences of those who do not.

    CHAPTER 1

That Which Is Done in Secret

    In Matthew chapter six Jesus

speaks of three specific things that we need to do in secret. They are giving alms, prayer, and fasting.

As Jesus taught on each of these three subjects, He spoke of those who would do each of these things for the purpose of being seen by men. He would then state that they already had their reward. In other words, to be seen by men was their reward and they would receive nothing from God.

The idea here is not that these things should never be done in public or in the presence of others; but that we should never do these things to please, impress, or be well thought of by men. We are to be pleasers of God, not of men. Although there are times that it is perfectly acceptable to unite together with other believers to give alms, pray, or fast; these things must also be a part of our personal relationship with God. Each of us need to give to God, which includes His people, just because of our love and as proof of the sincerity of our love (2 Cor. 8:8, 24). We each need to spend time alone with Him in prayer where we can pour out our hearts before Him. We also need times of fasting to remove ourselves from worldly things and draw closer to Him.
