ental illness is not a choice. No one chooses to outwardly appear to be lazy or unreasonable or paranoid. No one wakes up one day and decides to have illogical thoughts and disruptive reactions. These are symptoms of an illness that is no more preventable than any other illness. When I began exhibiting the symptoms of my mental illness in my teens, my parents sent me to a behavioral modification school in Montana. They did not think for even a moment that my behavior was a product of a debilitating illness. Mental health wasn’t spoken of in the late ‘90s. Unfortunately, the school they sent me to broke me down emotionally and mentally by using attack therapy and humiliation. The combination of mental illness and the trauma inflicted by this program led to me leading a tragic life for another fifteen years. Even after my diagnosis, the struggle was different but just as difficult. I want parents who read this book to consider the mental health of their child before entrusting and signing over 51 percent custody to complete strangers. I also want people who suffer from mental illness to know they are not alone, that their feelings are
