Chapter 1
Everyone Has A Scar Story
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5
Scars remind us of earlier wounds that healed but left living testimonies of circumstances and events that we endured and survived. Jesus has the most impactful scar story of all ages. He who knew no sin endured chastisement, mockery, unwarranted judgment, physical pain, and death on the Cross for our sins. He endured the Cross and survived the shame, humiliation, and unfair treatment and now sits at the right hand of God the Father making intercession for you and me. He knows what we are going through, and He knows how our scars can influence and shape our lives and futures.
Some scars are physical, some mental, some emotional, and some spiritual. Some are temporary and short-lived; others are permanent and stay with us for life. A scar forms where a wound used to be. Physical scars are visible and often have a story behind them. You can point to a physical scar and recall the story of how you got it and share it with others. That is seldom true of mental, emotional, and spiritual scars. They are not as easily recognized and are often hidden and never shared for fear of being judged or ridiculed, or because you are afraid the pain of the original wound will be brought back to the surface and you will have to live through it again. Even when others cannot see our scars, we all have them and they all tell a story.
I am going to share some of my scar stories with you in this book, and I encourage you to share your scar stories with others. From the sharing, we come to understand that we are not alone – many people share the same scars. They may be hidden in different places, but stem from the same kinds of wounds. When we open up and share with others, we stop focusing on ourselves and get about the Father’s work in the Kingdom. God put us here to be salt and light, and when we shine a light on our hidden scars, we encourage others to go on in their pain because they can see in us that wounds heal and life goes on, even if scars are left from the experience. We would not be the first to share our hidden pain so that others could benefit. Heaven is filled with a cloud of witnesses looking down from the balconies encouraging us with their scar stories. Here are just a few examples of the scar stories that continue to give Christians hope year after year because instead of hiding their grief, pain, and scars, these people shared their scars and turned them into great hymns of the faith that have brought comfort to millions ever since:
1. Horatio Spafford was a Chicago lawyer who lost all his properties in a fire in 1871. A few years later, he sent his wife and daughters on a voyage that ended with the ship sinking, and all four of his daughters were drowned. In spite of the tragedies he lived through, he still had hope when he wrote It Is Well With My Soul in 1873. Can you hear the hope in his words? Can you feel the peace of his scars?
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

2. Louisa Stead watched from the shore as her husband tried to save a young boy from drowning. Both the husband and the boy drowned. In 1882, there were no food stamps, no social security, and no help for widows with children. Amid their grief, Louisa and her daughter Lily came to the brink of starvation, destitute with no way to get food. But God knew the circumstances and miraculously provided them with food at just the right moment. Louisa sat down that night and penned the words to ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus. Christians have hummed and sung that song for almost 140 years, and from her scars, many people have received God’s comfort and reassurance of His promise to never leave or forsake them in time of trouble.
Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
And to know, Thus saith the Lord!

Shortly after writing this song, Louisa and Lily became missionaries to South Africa. From the ashes of their grief, God used their scars for the Kingdom.
3. Fanny Crosby got sick at six weeks old and as a result of treatment, lost her sight. She was poor and lived in a slum in New York. Her father died when she was six months old, and she was raised by her mother and grandmother. She attended a school for the blind where she learned to play several instruments and memorize whole books of the Bible including the
