Introduction
Introduction
The external world can be a huge factor in terms of defining your identity. Society is nothing less than masterful at subjecting a role onto you. Consequently, your ability to have some kind of control of your life, that state of taking responsibility for your own decisions and engaging in the defiant act of creating your own direction is severely challenged. Striving to get beyond the architecture of routine,
and being able to fulfill the promises you’ve made to yourself, much less living up to the potential that lives within you, seems to be a distant hope at best for far too many individuals. It is an age of disempowerment so to speak. If you have any doubts about this, read literally any job satisfaction or happiness poll that’s been conducted in the last five years. The stats are quite revealing. We seem to be always hesitant; waiting for permission on some level to move productively, and maybe more importantly, to move soulfully ahead with our personal and professional aspirations. This text is an unapologetic assault on that powerlessness, and the state of mediocrity that keeps us uninspired and unappreciated.
The Tools
Central to this journey of creating a more empowered persona is the capacity to distinguish your own strengths, internal needs, and your idiosyncratic profile of abilities. Through this act of self-discovery you are able to set the stage for reforming, refashioning, reconstructing, and ultimately transforming the impact of your personal and professional presence to put yourself in a position of power, which I define as the capacity or potential to influence.
You also want to be clear about the fact that this repositioning of your self is not dependent on which step of the ladder you stand. The acquisition of power, that ability to affect another’s beliefs and attitudes as well as the competence to incite change, inspire imagination, and facilitate productive and proactive growth is not an executive privilege. It is a human privilege.
I will reserve the term self-empowerment
as a process of self-discovery through which you increase inner strength, sharpen your mind, enrich interpersonal techniques, and consequently build identity capital. Conversely, powerlessness represents a lack of self-confidence in these areas of the self, coupled with the expectation that your own actions will be ineffective in influencing the outcome of any of the challenges and interactions you experience. It’s important to understand that a great deal of empirical evidence has shown that this state of individual ineffectiveness is not just human nature, nor is it some type of genetic endowment you’ve been handed. It is a lack of objective analyses of specific human proficiencies and drives; a failure to investigate and develop one’s inherent psychological, intellectual and psychosocial capabilities.
We’re all mesmerized by certain people who seem to own this self-empowering skillset. We deem them to be powerful individuals because of the image they project, and the inevitable sterling reputation that always seems to follow. They’re the change makers, the social virtuosos, the trailblazers, the mavericks, the movers, and the shakers. We know them, admire them, and often celebrate them. But one tires of envy, and that’s where the line needs to be drawn, and a serious look into becoming more self-empowered needs to be acted on. One must make a commitment to dissolve feelings of inadequacy and dismiss the limitations of mainstream and sociocentric thinking.
The Structure
The architecture of this journey involves creating a multi-based focus on all that you encompass and everything you do. That is an inner focus to establish your values and decisional competency, an interpersonal focus making sure connections are being made and valued, and an outer focus to help you navigate all of this in the larger world. With this text, the specificity of each chapter provides the tools of engagement for the development of creating that type of focus in each of the areas of power we’ll cover. They are to be examined, understood, endorsed, and acted upon—propositional attitudes of change to enhance productive, self-empowered growth. New theories (representational thoughts to make sense of the world and our actions) and ideas will arise, a self-conscious enterprise for the changing of minds, and consequently, outcomes.
Once you engage in these diverse steps to self-empowerment, you’ll be taking that first step to break through your unproductive stances of I can’t,
I’m not ready,
I don’t see a way,
I’m not in a position to,
and so on. These are presets that rule you more than you know, which can and should be addressed.
Here’s a quote to spin on by psychologist Edward de Bono, author of Lateral Thinking . De Bono said, Brilliant, yet obvious ideas lie hidden in our minds, just waiting to be fished out. What stops us from retrieving them is the clichéd way we think, always sticking to familiar labels, classifications, and pigeonholes.
This is known as the arrogance of established patterns. Couple that with your I can’t
syndrome, and it begins to shed some light on your relationship with stagnation. Even with the best intentions, you start to realize that your initial perspectives on the challenges you face and breakthroughs you desire can be definitively narrow, deceptively ambiguous and often superficial. These are not synonyms for empowered, which the upcoming chapters will clearly disclose.
The Alternative
Once you learn to break through these stereotyped notions and start seeing things more imaginatively, an alternative self-empowerment technique enters the fold—your creative potential. A great deal of research has been done in this area, and studies have clearly shown that the effort to engage in your personal challenges more creatively can cultivate transformative results. For the sake of continuity, let me offer you the branch of the creative process I’m specifically referring to, and its contextual overlay to the upcoming chapters.
One of the cornerstones of being a creative individual is applying imagination to intellect. As a Certified Creativity Coach, not to mention decades of being in the Arts as a musical composer, arranger and producer, I can assure you creativity is where the magic happens. And by magic, I’m referring to the discovery of new ideas, and the unearthing of new insights, and unforeseen variations and variables that lay beyond any type of intellectual prowess.
An example of this creative undertaking is in
