About this ebook

Spirituals have become part of our culture but their origin and purpose are not widely understood. Some show influence from Middle Eastern music which was part of the local culture in East Africa which was a source of slaves and others from the traditional music of West Africa which was a closer source of slaves. Here are ten of the best-known spirituals, e.g., "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", "Going Down to the River to Pray", and "Go Down Moses". All the individual parts are included for the convenience of players.

Abandoning 33 years of atheism, he returned to the Lutheran church, and became a church janitor in Scarsdale, New York for 18 months, while teaching at Iona College. He was a Green party candidate in Ontario in 2OO3. Returning to Europe, he was employed at the University of West Hungary until 2014, settled in a bourgeois suburb of Sopron, Hungary. Spirituals (also known as Negro spirituals, Spiritual music, or African-American spirituals) is a genre of music that is purely and solely the creation of generations of African Americans which merged African cultural heritage with the experiences of being held in bondage in slavery, at first during the transatlantic salve trade—the largest and most inhumane forced migration in recorded human history, and for centuries afterwards, through the domestic slave trade. Spirituals encompass the sing songs, work songs, and plantation songs that evolved into the blues, and the gospel songs in church. In the nineteenth century, the word spirituals referred to all these subcategories of folk songs. While they were often rooted in biblical stories, they also described the extreme hardships endured by African Americans who were enslaved from the 17th century until the 1860s.
