Chapter 1
THE MOMENT I ENTERED the restaurant, I spotted him.
Giovanni Mazza.
The boss of my family’s biggest rival.
He was sitting at the largest table, his dark brown eyes staring straight at me as if he wanted to find out all my secrets. His dark hair streaked with gray was perfectly combed, and his black suit was impeccable.
I’d never thought this day would come.
The Mazzas and my family had been at each other’s throats for a very long time. For the first time after decades of bloodshed and huge monetary and life losses, the Mazzas were willing to sit with us and try to negotiate peace.
It was something unheard of, and I was sure our enemies were waiting for the news of what was going to happen at this meeting with trepidation.
I strode toward the table, my head held high, my guards right behind me. My long, straight black hair was tied into a tight ponytail, and I was wearing a tight black suit and high boots.
My second-in-command, Rafael, had told me that if it weren’t for my blue eyes, I’d look as dark as death.
Ms. Cassaro,
Giovanni said with a smile on his face as he rose to his feet.
Mr. Mazza.
I shook his outstretched hand.
His gaze traveled up and down my body, and I made sure my expression was neutral. Even if the prospect of a deal between our families was exciting, I wasn’t about to show that.
I still had to hear Giovanni’s offer. There was a chance it would be something completely preposterous, and the deal would fall through after all.
After we took a seat and a waitress brought us some drinks, I eyed Giovanni.
Let’s get straight to business,
he said. I’m sure you’re a busy woman.
Yes, I am.
Our deal would be simple. We end the bloodshed and keep our territories as they are right now. We stay out of each other’s business. And if we end up with mutual enemies who want to take what’s ours, we fight them together. Instead of weakening ourselves by needless fighting while the others wait like sharks to catch us wounded, we can grow stronger.
He opened a file that was on the table and pulled out a contract, pushing it across the table to me. You have all the details in here.
I picked up the contract and skimmed through it, flipping through the pages. At first glance, there wasn’t anything suspicious or particularly alarming.
No traps that would give the Mazzas an unfair advantage or a loophole to get out of the deal and screw my family over.
But that didn’t mean something wasn’t hiding in there. My advisor and my lawyers would have to go through it very carefully before I agreed to sign anything. This deal obviously wasn’t actually legal, but it would be binding in the dark world of the underground.
If you have any other suggestions, we can discuss them,
Giovanni said. I think it’s in our best interest to reach an agreement.
My gaze fell on one of the clauses in the contract, and I jerked my head back.
What the fuck?
You want me to marry one of your sons?
I gaped at him.
What better way is there to truly unite our families and send a strong message to our enemies? A tie like that is needed to solidify our deal.
I pressed my lips into a tight line.
The last thing I wanted was to marry someone, and a Mazza at that. Wouldn’t that be like inviting a fox into a chicken coop?
Who knew what my husband would do?
Spy for the Mazzas?
Destroy us from the inside out?
I don’t think that’s a good idea,
I said.
I understand your concerns, but please read the rest of the contract. My youngest son would be your husband only in name. He’d be no more than your property, and he’d take your last name. You could do with him whatever you wanted.
My eyebrows lifted up.
Okay, now that was a whole new level of crazy.
I knew Giovanni was a complicated man, but to ask me to marry his son and take him basically as my slave? Who the fuck did that to their family?
But then again, many of those I knew had given their daughters away in marriage to crime bosses in exchange for something.
Some had been willing, some had not.
It wasn’t completely unheard of.
You’ll like him. There has to be a photo of him somewhere among these papers,
Giovanni said. He’s young and handsome. And he’s also a virgin.
My eyebrows rose even more.
If you prefer him to be more experienced, I can have him trained for you. To your particular tastes.
The corners of his lips quirked up, and he gave me a knowing look.
I’d gone to a sex club once and now everyone knew exactly what I’d done there.
Awesome.
Not.
And fuck. I didn’t even want to think what this would all mean.
No,
I said. There’s no need for that.
Ah, I knew you’d want to break him in yourself.
He grinned.
I forced my lips into a smile I didn’t feel. This was so damn ridiculous. I didn’t need a husband or a slave, or whatever the fuck Giovanni was offering.
We’ll see what happens. I need to take a good look at the contract first,
I said.
Yes, of course.
Giovanni pushed the rest of the papers toward me. Here. Take all of it and take a good look, then let me know what you think. You’d only need to keep my son for ten years. After that, you’re free to divorce and get rid of him, because I’m sure you’ll want someone younger by then. We can revisit our deal too.
I just stared at him.
I’ll let you know what I decided in a few days.
I got to my feet.
Excellent,
Giovanni said. I’m looking forward to your call.
I wanted to say that maybe he shouldn’t, but this was an opportunity of a lifetime.
Me marrying Giovanni’s son was a small sacrifice. One that didn’t make much sense to me, but if it was the only way for Giovanni to agree, then I didn’t have much choice.
But first, I needed to make sure there weren’t any hidden traps in the contract. The whole thing with my potential husband might be all about distraction so I wouldn’t see what was right in front of me.
But I wasn’t going to make such mistake.
I held the file and the contract in my embrace as I made my way to my car.
Rafael waited for me, opening the car door. His brown hair was messy, just like always, and his hazel eyes narrowed at me with curiosity.
How’d it go?
he asked.
He wants me to marry his son. Actually, not really marry. He wants me to take his son as my sex slave.
What?
Rafael’s jaw went slack.
Yeah, that was my reaction too.
What son? He has like five.
His youngest. He said there was a photo somewhere.
I opened the file and flipped through the papers.
Luca? He wants you to marry Luca?
His name was Luca? Well, hell.
His father hadn’t even bothered to tell me his name, probably because he didn’t even see him as a human being. That was so fucking weird.
Usually, when it came to psychos like Giovanni, it was the daughters who were treated like a commodity and sons were prized for whatever mysterious reason that defied common sense, but Giovanni didn’t have any daughters.
And if he had five sons, then he could certainly spare one to get what he wanted.
I finally found the photo and I nearly dropped everything I was holding.
It was a nude.
Oh, for fuck’s sake.
But Giovanni was right about one thing. His son was incredibly handsome, and his lean, strong body was perfectly shaped, the muscles in his crossed arms straining.
The angry fire in his dark brown eyes caught my attention the most. There was just something about them.
The dark brown short hair and dark brown eyes should’ve made him look a lot like his father, but he had completely nothing of Giovanni in him. His features were completely different, starting with his full lips.
Whoa, that’s a nice dick,
Rafael said.
What?
I glanced down.
True.
Whatever.
I tucked the photo back between two sheets of paper. I want to see my father,
I said before I got in the car.
Sure.
Rafael closed the door.
I leaned back in my seat.
Getting to my father was going to take a few hours because I couldn’t risk the Mazzas following me and finding him in case this was a trap and they were waiting for me to get too comfortable.
But I needed to talk to him about all this and hear his opinion. Sure, I was now officially in charge, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t going to consider his opinion.
After all, he had far more experience in all this than me.
Ever since an enemy had shot him, as his only child, I’d had to take over the business and everything. Since I’d been around my father all the time, I’d already learned a lot of things, and he’d been teaching me to take over one day too.
But because he’d ended up paralyzed from the waist down and I hadn’t had any problems stepping in, he’d decided that it was time for him to retire and transfer the power completely to me.
No one had argued or protested. Maybe it had helped that I’d hunted down the man who’d shot my father and killed him myself.
It felt like an eternity by the time I reached my father’s
