    About the author

Born in Scotland I now live with my husband in the North West of England.  We have three children who, between them, have given us six wonderful grandchildren.

During the years I became something of a letter writer as friends and family lived in many parts of the country.  Often friends and family would tell me…..‘you could write a book’ to which I always replied…..‘but would anyone read it’.

When my granddaughter asked if I would write a book especially for her I told my good friend Lisa Schmidt and she told me to go for it.  That book became the first of many stories which had been lurking in my imagination for a good number of years.

Once started I found the stories simply kept coming and often an overheard conversation or a glimpse from the passenger seat of the car would trigger a likely scenario which my imagination would then elaborate and weave into a story.

My hope is that my writing brings a little pleasure into the reader’s life and allows them to leave the mundane world behind for a few hours as they meet the characters I adore creating.

    Chapter 1

Aggie Denning saw the red convertible Porsche sports draw into the reserved parking space the driver obviously having pressed a button as the roof slowly covered the sleek dark head of Reagan Armstrong, the owner and CEO of Armstrong Electrical Industries.

In the northern town of Blackthorn where she had grown up, Reagan Armstrong had become something of a legend as a young man with drive and determination who had worked hard to develop his company and turn it into a successful enterprise; which sustained almost two hundred employees.

Having an inherently retiring nature which made it difficult for Aggie to project herself, joining the company had fulfilled a daydream of Aggie’s as her romantic imaginings worked overtime creating scenarios whereby the handsome dynamic CEO would sweep her off her feet.

As he extricated his long body he closed the driver’s door, at the same time pressing his key fob activating the lock and walked towards the entrance of the building he owned without so much as a backward glance to check his car.

Thinking it must be nice to have such confidence, Aggie turned from the window of the ground floor office she shared with her two fellow receptionists.  Marlene Salway, Glenda Barton and she worked a rota system so that there was always someone behind the front desk and today it was Glenda’s turn.

Walking to the reception desk Reagan placed his briefcase by his feet. Any messages for me Glenda?  He was pleased it was Glenda on duty and not Marlene Salway who was a little too forward for his liking with her pouting pose and suggestive manner.  The rather timid Aggie who always seemed to get tongue tied infuriated him and he wondered why Human Resources had placed her in reception.

Nothing of any urgency, Rita Carpenter said to remind you that she would be out of the office this afternoon, but if you needed anything urgently typed up Marlene or Aggie would be available.  Glenda wasn’t sure but she thought he groaned at the information he had received.

Thanks Glenda.  I am expecting a visit from Blair Hamilton and will probably require some notes to be taken during our meeting.  When he arrives send him up to my office with whichever of your colleagues is available.  Lifting his briefcase he walked to the lift taking him to the second floor and his office thinking his PA must have gone off her rocker.

Blair Hamilton was a major supplier of the components required to produce the electric motors Armstrong’s built for a range of domestic and industrial appliances. He and Reagan had met at university and formed a firm friendship although their social lives differed greatly.

There had been some problems with the supplies and Reagan needed to be reassured that his future orders would be fulfilled quickly and correctly. Reagan needed Rita’s input at the meeting he had arranged with Blair, and not some untrained receptionist who probably had no idea about note-taking.

Phil Lawson was Human Resources Director and Reagan walked into his office intending to find out why Rita had recommended one of the receptionists rather than one of the PA’s attached to other executives.

Rita thinks the young ladies are not being given a fair crack of the whip and to be honest I tend to agree with her.  The three young women are all qualified but lack the experience and I think Rita is thinking along the lines of promoting one of them when she retires in six months time. Phil saw the shock on Reagan’s face at the mention of Rita retiring.

Hell, I had forgotten about that.  Well I suppose we should give the women a chance.  One of them will be sitting in on my meeting with Blair Hamilton later this afternoon and I will give you my opinion of her abilities after the meeting.

Which of you is available because Blair Hamilton is about to walk in through the front entrance?  Glenda smiled when she heard Aggie groan and open a drawer in her desk to take out a notepad and a couple of pencils.

Sorry sweetie, I know you were hoping I would be finished this report by the time Mr Hamilton arrived but I’m afraid it has taken longer than I expected.  Marlene was genuinely sorry as she rather liked Blair Hamilton and thought it would be fun being in his company for a little time, even if it was work related.

Okay, Marlene.  I suppose it was inevitable I would be the one.  After all it would have been too much to hope that I would be assigned to one of the other executives rather than the one who thinks I am an empty headed ninny.

Get out of here Aggie and stop being so negative, you know of the three of us you have the best qualifications to be a damned good PA.  Marlene laughed as she turned back to the in-depth audit she was writing for Phil Lawson explaining the duties of the receptionists in minute detail.

Good afternoon Mr Hamilton, my name is Aggie and if you care to follow with me I will take you to Mr. Armstrong’s office.  ‘Well that was the easy bit done’ thought Aggie as she stepped from behind the high reception counter and took a deep breath.

Aggie preferred to have some time to prepare for any changes in her life therefore the prospect of facing, not only the CEO, but a total stranger was causing her stomach to knot.

For Marlene to say her qualifications surpassed theirs did not stop her feeling totally out of her depth, it was one thing to dream of being noticed but entirely another story to face reality and she wanted to get the whole experience behind her; therefore her steps were hurried as she walked towards the lift.

Whoa there, I’m not in such a hurry to visit Reagan, perhaps we should take it a little slower and then you might not be in danger of slipping on these tiles.  Blair wasn’t sure whether the young woman simply wanted to execute her task efficiently or if she did not want to be in his company too long.

I assure you I will not slip Mr Hamilton but thank you for your concern.

As the lift carried them to the third floor Aggie reflected on the fact Reagan Armstrong’s confident manner always seemed to intimidate her and invariably reduced her to a gibbering wreck.

    The reflection which stared back
