Heather's brief marriage to David ended, leaving her hurt, humiliated, and depressed. Her Aunt Betty suggested she come to visit. And spend the summer house-sitting for her, while she travels to Europe. Betty's house in Virginia had always been Heather's favorite place to visit.

Betty was happy when Heather accepted her offer. She so hoped Heather would meet someone to help her heal. One never knows what storm may come their way. Surviving the deep pain inflicted by a cheating husband should be enough. However, for some, love is their only relief. And that relief rarely knocks on your door.

Surprisingly interesting. Has suspenseful and mysterious elements. I originally chose it for potential marriage in trouble and infidelity factors and discovered that it is much more than romance!

Chapter One

The first time I saw him he was working for a roofing contractor. My next-door neighbor, Mark Sloan was having his roof replaced because of hail damage. Mark and Lidia Sloan are a twenty-something couple. He’s an accountant and Lidia works from home I’m not exactly sure what she does. I know she loves social media and the Internet.

Lidia’s cute and has an appetite for attention. She likes to get online and cam. For her, it's fun to see how far she can get men to go.  We sit and laugh at the outrageous lengths some go just to see her butt.

I laugh with her but I resent her as well. She has money she’s young, beautiful and married to a successful professional. She’s flirty and blonde.

I find myself reflecting on the moment I first saw Liam. I kept going back and peeking out the window. I loved it when he was a few feet from my window.  I’m at my Aunt Betty’s house, I’m living here for the summer while she visits Europe.

Aunt Betty is my favorite person and all I have left. My name is Heather Abbot. I divorced David fourteen months ago.  I was a June bride, my husband left me on my thirty-second birthday. Six months before that, all those long hours and weekends he claimed he was working, he was cheating.

He humiliated me, he belittled me, he shattered me. If you ever shake the hand of David Abbot, you just shook the hand of a lying cheater.  Weeks of crying, months of feeling sick at my stomach and worthless finally gave way to anger. I’ve been hiding from the world, too embarrassed to face family and friends. I withdrew to this small town in Virginia, Oak Grove is my sanctuary.

Aunt Betty talked me into watching this house for her, to give me time to think and get away from my home in Maryland. I don’t have to face the neighbors and friends that knew what was going on before I did. I’m so humiliated.

I was just settling in here when I saw Liam. His long black hair, brown eyes and dark skin would catch any woman's eye. A perfect smile and chiseled body he’s breathtaking. I feel tingles through my body every time I look at him.

I know he’s a little younger than me at twenty-six.  I try to forget about love. I don’t know if I can go through the pain and humiliation again. However, my craving for him is irresistible. I have over fifty photos of him that I look at daily. I’m obsessed with him. I’ve not been with a man for eighteen months.

That’s my doorbell, who could it be?  I see an older man with long blonde hair and a white goatee.  Can I help you?

Yes I’m Anthony Wade, I’m here to have a look at the dishwasher. You called yesterday. I can’t believe I forgot that I called him yesterday, I feel like such a fool.

Oh hello Mr. Wade please come in, I’m sorry I forgot all about you coming over.

Don’t worry the usual problem is a clogged drain, which won’t take long.

I’m Heather, pleased to meet you.

He stepped in and walked towards the kitchen. His sparkling blue eyes pierced me. He’s wearing a tank top showing his broad shoulders and hairy chest. This is the first time I have seen him Betty spoke of him before.

I feel silly, I hope I did not leave dirty dishes in the rack. I better get in there and check. He already has it opened thank goodness it was empty.

Betty speaks of you often.

Good I hope.

Oh yes always good, she tells me about her wonderful niece. Although she never told me you were so beautiful.  Oh my, I’m blushing, it’s been so long since a man referred to me as beautiful.

Thank you, Mr. Wade.

Call me Tony, I speak only the truth.

What a charming, handsome man. This house has been my sanctuary. I go shopping and watch Netflix. I often watch romantic comedies that make me cry. I said hello to Liam and he said hi back one time. The next time he either did not hear me or ignored me.

I try to convince myself that my reclusive routine is normal.  I tune in soft music and slip into my fantasy world with my pictures of Liam.  I soak in the tub, sip wine and dream of breathtaking moments in his arms. I don’t know if I’m beautiful enough for him but I hope he gives me a chance.

How long are you staying?

Until October, Betty says she will be back by September fifteenth.

Well, you never know she might decide to stay a while longer.

Yes, one year she stayed six months.

She told me about David.

My face is turning red. How could Betty tell some stranger about my personal life?

Oh, I don’t discuss my personal life, Mr. Wade. Let me know when you finish.

My first wife left me for our next-door neighbor. It took me a while to get back out there. But I had to move on.   I pretended I did not hear him.

I’m in the living room trying to forget what he said. I feel betrayed.  It’s been ten minutes he’s coming in here.

That should take care of it, a clogged line was the problem. I apologize, Heather, I had no business bringing up your divorce. Please don’t get mad at Betty, she adores you. She worries about you.

I know but I feel like I can’t trust anyone. Why would she tell you? You don’t even know me. Aunt Betty is all I have left. Now I’m going to start crying, damn it.

I’m sorry I upset you.

No, I know you did not mean anything. He extended his big strong hand. I felt his rough skin as he gently grasped my hand.

Friends?

Yes, Mr. Wade.

Please call me Tony.

Okay, Tony.

You called my home number last night, I’m going to leave my cell number too. And if you need anything just give me a call. Even if you just need to talk.

Thank you I’ll be okay, I don’t want to disturb you and your family.

Don’t worry about that, I live alone. Beth passed away two years ago, my daughter Jenny is away at college. It’s just the old man now.

I’m sorry for your loss, I did not mean to remind you.

That’s alright Beth never leaves my mind. As bad as my first marriage ended, as humiliating and painful as it was, it was part of the journey. The journey that led me to Beth’s arms. I could see from the expression on his face when he spoke her name, how precious she is to him.

That’s wonderful.

Our time together was too short. I miss her. Call me if you need anything.

I will Tony thank you for fixing the dishwasher. Also for your kindness. I appreciate it.

It was a pleasure meeting you.  Call me anytime. He walked out the door leaving me curious about every detail of his life. I want to know everything. I could not stop looking into his eyes they captivate me.

It’s almost time for Liam. He has been over there every afternoon lately. Today I’m going to sunbathe while he’s there I hope he notices. I don’t want the entire roofing crew gawking at me. Today he should be alone.

He’s been coming by doing extra work for Mark. I’m sure Lidia flirts with him and finds work for him to do. But that’s okay it gives me a chance to see him. I may try to find something for him to do here. Something that will take a while.

I bought a new hot pink bikini and had my nails done this morning. I’ve lost eight pounds since I noticed Liam.  I’m already getting nervous.

Okay, I have my lemonade and my magazines I’m all set out here, Liam should be by anytime.

Hello, Heather.

Hi, Mark how are you?

I’m good a little stressed.

What’s wrong?

I’m pissed, the guy helping me can’t make it today. It will be tomorrow evening before he can get here and my schedule conflicts with that.

Oh, what have you been doing.

He’s building shelves in my outbuilding. And hauling off junk.

Hi Heather, you look beautiful.

Thank you, honey, I’ve lost eight pounds, now I’m trying to tan.

Mark walked back to his house as Lidia came over and sit down beside me.

Mark bitched all afternoon because Liam’s not come over. He’s such a jerk.

He’s mentioned being mad about it. Lidia’s hungry eyes crawled slowly
