Chapter 1

Watchful Charity

The only thing I am feeling right now is completely overwhelmed.

I thought I would relief by escaping and I do, but right now I’m too overwhelmed to think about anything else.

Before Dove Loyal came to get me, no, it’s Jane White now, before my escape I had never even seen a car. But now I have spent close to three days in one, Jane says it’s easy to drive and she will teach me but I’m not sure I want to know.

This world is scary, it’s so different to the world I grew up in, the only world I have ever known. These places called gas stations are dirty and buying food in a packet is a new concept for me but Jane promises to help me adjust.

Pulling up outside a small house, we walk inside with our meager belongings. I didn’t take anything with me but Jane brought me a few items of clothing so I wouldn’t stand out.

I don’t expect to be greeted by someone else when we step inside but I’m pleasantly surprised to see a familiar face, Hope Kindness, it’s so good to see you.

I have a shower, which is something about this world that I thoroughly enjoy and Isabella makes us dinner. I want to help her but I’m very confused about all of the appliances so I sit down and watch television. This is something that I have become accustomed to since Jane and I spent two nights in a motel on the drive here.

It’s a fascinating invention and Jane says that I can learn a lot about how society works by watching tv shows and movies.

After dinner, I am shown how to load a dishwasher and then Jane leaves to get some work done. Isabella and I sit down to enjoy some more television, I was tired when I first arrived but now I’m wide awake and ready to learn everything I can.

So, what’s the first thing you would like to do? I recommend ice cream, it’s delicious, it’s a cold, creamy desert. Isabella seems a lot happier than the last time I saw her; I don’t remember her being this talkative.

Oh, um, I’m not sure I should tell you, Jane seemed to get mad when I told her what I wanted to do. Well, she was quite mad when she got over her initial shock of my request.

Now you have to tell me, come on! I might be able to help. Isabella changes position so she is now facing me on the couch so I turn to match her posture.
