Wanting A Dragons Baby - Amelia Wilson
Prologue
––––––––
Joe Maschino could feel the heat of the forest fire from inside his beefed-up truck, even though he wasn’t off the main road yet. The inferno raged like a vengeful king, mercilessly striking down massive, ancient forest trees. They fell to the floor with clunks that were painful to hear.
He could feel the burning heat radiating from his seat, his belt, and even his shoes. The temperature threatened to melt his boots into his feet.
His nostrils flared dangerously. He worried he was too late. He worried he’d see her, and wouldn’t be able to resist changing.
He can’t. Not after what happened last time.
This was all his fault. The fire. The danger to the town.
Some park ranger he had turned out to be.
Some husband he was.
Then Joe heard it. The roar that wasn’t the forest burning.
He smashed on the gas and pulled into the parking next to the trailhead. If he could stop it, if he could save the forest, maybe he could save her.
He felt like a fool as he tried to tell himself he wasn’t too late. Another blast of fire erupted above him.
It had found him.
He drove behind a massive stone, the plaque on it telling the history of the forest and commemorating some big Montana deal. He had never bothered to read it. Why come to the forest to learn about men?
His heart dropped out of his chest and into his stomach, where he could feel the acid eating into it. In the twilight and illuminated by the murderous fire, everything was clear. He saw the pinkish dress, torn and tattered and half-burnt away, tossed on to the stone next to him.
Then he heard the unearthly shriek of a mythical scream from the sky. He looked up, and it was as if a mountain of gold was moving across his vision. A mountain with a huge, gaping mouth and glinting, golden eyes.
He screamed back, Carlita Jean,
the rage bubbling out of his mouth like blood.
The only answer he received was a burst of fire that engulfed him and the trailhead.
He wished he could say he blacked out. But he remembered every second.
Chapter One
––––––––
Cammie hugged me at the airport gate, squealing happily at the sight of me, then pulling me against her and whispering the real low-down in my ear, Thank God you came, I’ve been going crazy up here alone. A girl can only talk to the squirrels for so long, you know, before she goes a little...
I suggested, Nutty,
and she snorted, rolling her eyes at me.
Cammie was quite possibly one of the best people in the world. She was pretty as a Disney princess (I think she was one for a few years out of college), smart as a whip and ambitious as all hell. Which is why it was so confusing when she quit her job working cybercrime, as my partner at the FBI, so she could run off to Montana, of all places.
But hell, I needed
