Chapter One

Breanna

Is anyone there?

My voice is a pathetic cry that goes unanswered, just as it has for the past hour. I’m in a dark cell that’s freezing with no blankets. With no window, I can’t even be sure what time of day it is. The more I think, the more I’m sure it’s been much longer than an hour since I was stripped and thrown in this dank space.

Crawling to the opposite wall, I feel around blindly in the dark. Oh no, it’s just a smooth surface with few cracks. My knocks are futile because no one responds, and my knuckles begin to ache as I bang against the concrete.

There have to be other girls here, but who knows where they’re being kept? After all, trafficking women is the Pontillo crime family’s bread and butter. It’s sick and twisted yes, but they’re experts. And after months of studying the organization, I’m finally in the thick of the organization as a cop with the NYPD.

Okay, more accurately, I’m a junior trainee with New York’s Finest. Most rookies don’t go out on the street so soon, but Vice needed an undercover agent fast, and I was that person.

But I’m not just any undercover cop. I’m sneaking into the crime family syndicate as a hooker. Can you believe it? I’m working undercover as someone who sells her body for dollars and cents. It’s hard to stomach, but at the same time, it’s just part of the job. Two of my female co-workers, Jen and Katie, have gone undercover as prostitutes before, and now it’s my turn.

But I’m definitely a little bit nervous. After all, there’s so much publicity around this kind of work these days. There was that mess down in Florida, where they snared a bunch of billionaires at some Asian massage parlor. The entire thing makes my skin crawl, but then again, this is why I became a police officer. To help people, and especially women in need. My heart goes out to the prostitutes who had no choices.

Plus, I’m not sure I feel any remorse for the buyers. After all, they’re men who are using women for money. They tell themselves that the women want to be there, but from what I’ve read about these situations, the women usually have little choice. Many of them were trafficked, and their passports were taken away by ruthless pimps. It doesn’t sound like the women wanted to be there under any circumstances. I know I wouldn’t.

But despite my reservations, working this gig is a huge deal because Vice needed someone pronto, and I was the only woman in the entire precinct with the right look and attitude. They needed someone relatively young, with a pretty face and a sweet demeanor. They didn’t want someone older, although our best officers are ladies who’ve been on the force thirty or more years. I have a lot of respect for them, and hope to emulate their service.

Plus, being part of the NYPD has been my dream for years. I went to the Police Academy and graduated with honors. My family was proud because all the Conners are in law enforcement, including Dad, my two brothers, and even Gramps way back in the day.

But oh no. Here I am now, naked as the day I was born in this barren cell. My teeth chatter viciously, so hard that I can feel it in my brain. What did the training manual say again about situations like this? Something about tactical strength and courage under fire? Much good that’s doing me right now. All I feel is scared.

It’s because after weeks of working to infiltrate the family, I thought I was finally beginning to see some success. The Pontillos trust me now. They joke and laugh, letting down their guard even when I’m in the room. Of course, quite a few of the hit men ignore me altogether, like I’m a piece of furniture. But I guess that’s what I am to them – an asset that makes money. So yes, I’d say my cover as a hooker is working well.

But then why am I locked in this cell, apart from all the other girls? I thought the Pontillos bought it, especially after I did that slutty dance at the club. Twisting and turning, I shimmied as I smiled. The old fat guy who seems to be in charge most days chortled, and let out a big belly laugh. I thought I had them eating out of the palm of my hand.

But maybe not, given my current circumstances.

Shit! What do I do now?

It seems like I’m trapped with no way out. Quickly, I’m regretting my decision to go undercover.

But I only have myself to blame. When the Captain came to me with the undercover gig, it was clearly going to be dangerous. What UC job isn’t? Plus, my particular assignment was especially heinous. The crime family operates out in the open, with complete arrogance and no regard for authority. That’s how bad the Pontillos are.

But Cap assured me things would be okay. I’d have maximum surveillance with lots of undercover cops backing me up disguised as janitors, mailmen, and the like. Sure, they couldn’t tell me who they were because their job is to blend in. But I was okay with it because uncertainty is always part of the job. So I nodded stoutly, chirping, Sir, sign me up! I’m happy to do my part.

But now here I am in this godforsaken black box, freezing cold with no hope. I’m all alone, with no wires, no back-up, and no handy gadgets to ferret my way out. I can’t even see because it’s pitch black.

A shiver runs down my spine, and I huddle on the floor with my arms wrapped around my knees. Why oh why was I so stupid? I shouldn’t have done that dance at the club. I was hamming up my disguise as a hooker, but somehow, I lost control along the way. It was the drinks that got to me. After downing one too many vodkas, the Pontillo men grinned knowingly at each other. One dude whispered in my ear and said he was gonna make me his woman. Immediately, my ears perked. Because this was the inside track, right? He was going to blab all his secrets to me, the honey pot. I’m the sexy girl planted by NYPD to make his lips go loose.
