Dangerous Jobs: Firefighter is an informational book about what firefighters do, how they train, and the dangers involved in their work. I like this book for three reasons, beginning with the writing, which capture’s the reader’s attention in the first sentences of chapter one, Fire!, which reads, ”A group of firefighters is relaxing at the station. Suddenly, a call comes in. There is a house on fire!” Another aspect that I like is the various lists and additional information that accompany the text. In chapter three, Danger!, a gear checklist accents the text’s discussion of safety measures. Finally, I like how the level of information is appropriate for elementary aged readers, with certain words, such as endurance, volunteer, and collapse, highlighted to indicate that their definition is available in the glossary.
