About this ebook
Elijah loved when his father would take him to visit the nearby town. Everything there was new and exciting, and he grew up loving the world outside of his little Amish community. One day, against his mother's wishes, he is sent into town to collect some things, and there he meets a girl from the local high school. He quickly finds himself tossed into a whirlwind relationship with her, which makes him question everything that he had ever known.
When problems arise, does Elijah decide that his life in the Amish community is really what he wants? Is there something there to keep him around? Or will this girl that he barely knows make him think that his life is not what he wants it to be?
A standalone short story, with no cliff-hangers.

Outside the Familiar
Chapter 1
My mother despised me for my love of the people outside the Amish community. I had spent much of my childhood fascinated with them; they were like aliens to me. They had the same faces and hair color as many of my friends, but they didn’t have to cover them up. Many of the girls I saw wore pants; that was really bizarre to me.
My father sort of shared my interest. He was friends for a long time with a family who used to come and pick us up at our farm once a week to take us into the town to get groceries and tools. When I turned seven, he asked me if I wished to go along to help him. At first I really had no desire to go; I would have rather stayed back and played with all of my friends. But he encouraged me to go with promises of sweets, and so I went along.
The first time that I walked into a department store, I felt as if I had stepped into an entirely different world. What overwhelmed me the most was the sheer amount of surplus there was of every item on the shelves. Soaps and candies and clothing. And the food! There was more food there than I could have ever known what to do with, and most of it was foreign to me. I had never seen bagged chips or soda pop or even the food that I have come to love; pizza.
We picked out some nails for my father’s new chicken coop, and some basic fabrics and sewing needles for my mother and her sewing machine. It was my youngest sister’s birthday so he wished to pick her up a birthday present. He decided on a beautiful doll with long blonde hair. He told me that mother had sewed her a little Amish dress so she would be appropriate.
I thought that the pink flowered patterned dress she had was perfectly lovely as it was. It sort of made me sad to see it go. I knew that Emily would have loved it.
Then, with a gleam in his eye, my father led me over to a part of the store where there were tables and a long counter where a nice looking woman stood with a bright red apron. He ordered two small soda pops.
It was probably one of the best experiences of my life. I had never tasted anything quite like it. It was so sweet that it made my mouth tingle, and the bubbles were very intense; they flooded my nostrils and I nearly spit it out.
But once I got used to it and learned to take smaller sips, I loved it.
I asked for it every time we went out. My father thought it was funny; my mother found it infuriating. But I continued to travel out with him until I was almost fourteen, and then my chores and responsibilities around the farm started to pick up as my father began to teach me how to run my own farm.
