Chapter 1
MOVING STINKS! STINKS! STINKS!
Being an only child stinks! Stinks! Stinks! I never have anyone to play with. Sunny days, cloudy days, inside or outside, I have to play by myself. I will admit rainy days are the worst because I cannot go outside. At least on the sunny and cloudy days, I can bounce the ball on the side of the house. There are only two things to do on a rainy day. Number one, clean up and number two, watch the rain fall. I really don’t want to do either but, well, you know, I gotta do something! Today it is at least interesting because my dad and I are supposed to be moving to Alabama. So I am watching all the movers move our stuff. You would think I would be happy about the move but I am not. I do not want to move to Alabama. I have several good reasons! First of all California is my home and I have made so many friends here that need me. Take for instance Ms.
Dickerson! Her cat, Mr. Whiskers gets in the big tree on the corner at least twice a week. I always climb the tree to get him for her. Except the one time he climbed to high and we had to call the fire department. What is she going to do without me? I also have a friend from school that I help with his math. His name is Marcus. He is a really nice boy but, well, you know, he’s not that bright when it comes to math. Without my help, he is doomed! My parents were military doctors so they moved around a lot. My mother was a pediatric doctor. That is a big word for baby doctor. My dad is a dentist. So they moved around a lot. When they moved to California, I was still in my mommy’s belly. But when I was born, she passed away. Dad says that he was really sad after mommy died so one year after another he just stayed in California. There are only two things I know about my mom. She really liked California and, she loved first names because she named me Allison Penelope James. I know it’s weird, weird, weird because, well, you know, I have three first names. But it was something she gave me along with California. I have pictures of her and she was very pretty. Dad says I get my good looks from her. I have lived in California all my life. And it feels like I am leaving all my friends and my mom. And that makes me sad.
Even though I have three first names, my dad does not use any of them! He calls me Alli! You would think I would miss having a mommy but my dad is the greatest! He plays dress up with me at my tea parties. He pitches the softball to me. And my personal favorite, is when we get to go on new adventures! We have gone to the beach to play in the sand, the Grand Canyon, fun parks, and so much more. Dad always has some sort of adventure for us. But I don’t like this adventure.
Did I tell you the part of Alabama we are moving to doesn’t even have a beach! Can you believe that! We will not wake up to the sound of seagulls looking for their breakfast. We will no longer hear the waves crashing into the ocean. We won’t even get to see the people do their funny dances along the pier. I don’t want to move because California is perfect! The sun shines most of the time. The ocean smells so good, and you can surf! Oh my goodness, we will not be able to surf anymore!
In spite of all California’s beauty, dad says, since I am getting to be a big girl
, as he puts it, he feels the need to get closer to family in Alabama so he accepted a new job down there. Moving way, Way, WAY down to Alabama is going to be different. In California, it’s just me and dad. To be honest, I like it like that. However, in Alabama we have lots of family.
