About this ebook

It is God's perfect will and purpose for us, His children, to walk in a position of authority and dominion on the earth (Gen. 1:27-28). But instead of walking in authority and dominion, many of us walk in defeat and frustration. Many believers have failed to exercise authority over situations that confront them so they can walk in dominion and, therefore, are despaired of life. Many, including some in leadership positions, are not experiencing breakthroughs in their lives. A lot of these believers put on a brave front meanwhile, in their personal lives they are not happy because they are not experiencing victories in a lot of areas in their lives. Some of these people are doing everything they know to do (physically) in order to walk in victory, but no matter how hard they try, they don't seem to have the results they are looking for.

    ABOUT THE BOOK

It is God’s perfect will and purpose for us, His children, to walk in a position of authority and dominion on the earth (Gen. 1: 27-28). Some of these people are doing everything they know to do (physically) in order to walk in victory, but no matter how hard they try, they don’t seem to have the results they are looking for.

I strongly believe that believers are not walking in authority and dominion they should walk in because they are not praying hard enough. And those who are praying and still not experiencing victories in their lives are not praying according to the way God has prescribed in His Word (Bible). Some believers don’t know how to spend time with God in prayers; others pray only when they want God to answer a need. When they are hurting and need a solution or when they have been rejected by families and friends and feel lonely, they run to God to intervene. Some of these people are harbouring hatred, unforgiveness, and bitterness and that hinder their prayers. And those who make the time to pray are not praying hard to breakthrough point.

This book intends to show what prayer is and to distinguish between the different kinds of prayers there are and how to use them and what to do in order to have breakthroughs in our prayer lives. I also intend to show us some of the things that hinder our prayers and how if we turn away from them we will live a life of breakthroughs a lot of the time.

    FOREWORD

I was ten years old when my mother sent me away from home to live with one of my aunties from my mother’s side in a town three hundred miles away from my home town. I was initially excited when I was told that I was going to live with this aunt, because she was a highly educated woman, and I thought living with her would help me in terms of my education. We arrived at my aunt’s place one Saturday evening and were welcomed by her happily. Three months into my stay with her, things turned very bad; my aunt began maltreating me. I was left alone at home for long hours and sometimes days without food. I was punished for the slightest wrong I did. I was beaten with the cane a lot of the time, and I was left unsupervised. The situation was so bad that I used to beg for food from the other girls in the neighbourhood.

I used to hide in a dark room where old and disused boxes were kept (called the storage room) and cry. I remember as I cried I would pray to God with tear-filled face to let my mother come for me. I used to do this quite often. One day out of desperation and sadness, I came out of the room and sat under the staircase crying and asking God to some how do something to bring my mother to me. As I sat crying, I fell asleep without knowing. Suddenly, I felt a hand touch me and call my name. I opened my eyes and there she was, my mother, smiling at me. I jumped to my feet and screamed with joy when she told me she had come to take me home. I did not give much thought about this incident after that until later on in life when I became a Christian. I did not know anything about prayer at that time. I only knew that there was a powerful being somewhere called God who could make my mother come and take me home from all my troubles when I called on Him. Many years later, I have come to understand that God was teaching me how to call on Him (pray), especially when I needed help and that He will answer when I pray. I now understand that God loves me dearly, cares about me, and that it is His perfect will and purpose for me to walk in a position of authority and dominion on earth through my relationship with Him and through prayer.

I have experienced many ups and downs in my life, but I have also experienced many breakthroughs in my life through prayer. I have discovered that it is the will of God to answer our prayers when we pray correctly, aligning our lives with His Word, and also getting rid of everything that can hinder our breakthroughs. It is my sincerest prayer that by the time you come to the end of this book you will believe that God indeed loves you and cares about you and wants you to experience breakthroughs in your prayer life, and He is ready to answer you when you pray.

    CHAPTER ONE

    The Weapon of Prayer

Christians are in a spiritual warfare with an unseen enemy. In our spiritual fight, God has given us powerful weapons to defeat the works of the enemy.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh; for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds. (2 Cor. 10: 3)

Put on the whole armour of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand. Stand therefore having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Eph. 6: 11-17)

The above scriptures outline the armour that God has provided for our protection and defence. But verse 18 talks about another weapon in our spiritual weapon store that is sometimes overlooked—prayer.

    What Is Prayer?

The act of communicating with God is what the Bible calls prayer, and it is the means through which God releases power. Prayer is a weapon that God has given us (His children) to successfully overcome and overturn the plans of the enemy against us and bring complete victory. It is so powerful that it can penetrate the spiritual realm, break through enemy territory, bind the power of the enemy, and destroy strongholds. It is also the means that gives God access into our lives to have fellowship with us.

God loves us, His children, very much, and like any father, He wants us to talk to Him so He can also talk back to us all the time. He wants us to ask Him for strength, direction, wisdom, and help for our everyday life and also for the purpose for which He created us and has called us into His kingdom. God is sovereign, knows all things, and can do all things, but He chose to do things through our prayers.

Prayer can put a stop to the enemy’s plans before it takes effect on us. Prayer can also bring to pass God’s purposes for our lives and establish our visions. Prayer can also change our lives, and it is the key to a successful and victorious Christian life.

‘Prayer is God’s ordained means through which He manifests His Kingdom and fulfil His plan for mankind in the earth.’

‘It seems God is limited by our prayer life—that He can do nothing for humanity unless someone asks Him.’2

At the time of writing this book, I have been in ministry for about ten years pastoring a church, and throughout these years, I have experienced a lot of troubles in my life for
