Prologue
March 26, 1989
It was a beautiful day. The birds were chirping. Children were playing, and the trees reached as tall as the eye could see. The weather wasn’t too hot or too cold for anyone. It was a day that the Lord had made. I stood under a big redwood tree that faced the river. I couldn’t have asked for a better day, but that was everyday here in Heaven. I was standing there admiring God’s creation and watching the children play, the animals walking around greeting the humans, wanting to be petted. I loved being an angel; it had to be the best blessing God had ever bestowed upon me. I was truly grateful. I was in awe of Heaven. You really can’t explain how amazing Heaven is. You won’t really know until you see it.
Tristan, the Lord wants to see you,
I heard someone yelling from a distance. I turned around to face this angelic being. I saw her come towards me, which allowed me to see her.
An assignment, Tristan!
Nevaeh said excitedly as she finally caught up to where I was standing. Come, Tristan!
She grabbed my hand and we ran toward Jesus before I could say anything or ask any questions. We ran at lightning speed; we zipped passed Paul who was teaching in the garden. We passed Mary as she was talking with the mothers. Heaven was full of so many people. We finally found Him standing under a big oak tree talking to a group of children, who were petting lions, tigers, cheetahs, wolves, and many other animals. He turned around as we approached. He had a smile on His face as he greeted us. He touched Nevaeh’s hand and looked at her. She then knew that it was time for her to depart from us. She slowly walked away, looked back, and smiled.
Tristan!
Jesus hugged me. There was so much love that flowed from Him. He held me back at arms length and looked at me.
Lord?
I said.
Ah, yes. I have an assignment for you.
The Lord put His hand on my shoulder. As we walked side by side, we didn’t say a word for a while. We then walked to the bank of the river. I looked into the crystal clear water and saw the bottom of the river. There were pebbles and rocks made of gold. There were numerous fish with bright colors. Some were transparent with only a hint of color. I felt a light breeze come over me whereby I could smell the sweet perfume of Heaven flow under my nose. I finally broke the silence.
Anything, Lord.
I replied. I looked into His fiery eyes. His hair flowed like the river of life.
Well, there is a little girl about to be born soon. Her name is Jessica. I want you to be her guardian angel,
the Lord said as He smiled at me.
I was so excited! I heard the angels up here talking about how amazing it is to be a guardian angel. The things they got to do and see, it seemed so amazing, such as fighting for a person and guarding a person all of their life. It’s like having a best friend. Some angels have told me that when the person lives for the Lord, devoted, and really believes, sometimes the human gets to see them. My fellow angel, Mica, told me that he and his human fought demons together (in the supernatural). Just the thought of that made me so excited! I was ready to guard a human. I had been in Heaven since it was made, and I was in charge of the arts. Other angels, kids, adults, and I would paint and draw pictures for the Lord, which He would hang up on a huge wall that was the entire length of Heaven. The pictures, drawn and hung on the wall, have been here since Lucifer was here and in charge of the music department. I remember when he would do the music and have the choir of angels sing and play various musical instruments. The others and I would draw or paint what we felt when we heard the music. Then Lucifer took a turn for the worse, so David was put in charge of the music. He played the harps so Heavenly.
Lord. Who will be in charge of the art?
I asked.
Lana is. Her human just passed to be with us; therefore, I am putting her in charge so you can guard Jessica,
He replied as He smiled at me and put His arm around my shoulder.
Well, when shall I be going?
I asked.
Right about… . now!
He said. As the Lord spoke those last words, I bolted down to Earth. On my way there, I saw angels coming from Earth with their humans in their arms. The humans had taken their last breath on Earth and were about to take their first breath in Heaven. I saw babies being brought back to Heaven to start a new life. I was now out of the Heavenly realm and could see Earth, which was a small circle from where I was located. I was traveling at lightning speed! Earth was getting bigger and bigger. Ah, I now penetrated through to Earth… Marion, Indiana, is where Jessica would be entering the world. I made a sharp left, passed Ohio. Then there was Indiana. I finally made it to Marion. I found the hospital and bolted to the room where Jessica was. I entered the room to find Jessica wrapped in a blanket with her mother holding her and her dad admiring her. I slowly walked over and looked at her; she was so tiny. I just stood there admiring her as I pictured our future. I looked out the window of the hospital room, which looked into the hall, and I saw a devilish human walking towards me. He wore a long, dark purple robe with a black belt. His hood was over his face, and I couldn’t see it. There was a long chain leading from his hand down the hall. He kept walking as he looked my direction and snarled. He pulled on the chain and following behind him was a man chained up by the neck. The man was in his late forties and was trying to keep up, but he kept falling down because the demonic being was practically dragging him. The chained man looked in my direction as he slammed up against the window. I looked at Jessica and her family; they didn’t hear or see anything. Then I looked back at the man in chains. Help me, holy one,
he mouthed. I knew where this man was going and it saddened me to know. The demon yanked on the chain and was dragging the man on his back. He looked at me and was crying. I then saw a doctor walk down the hall to talk to a family sitting in the lobby. He shook his head, and then the others started to cry. It was the family of the man who was going to hell. They had lost him. I closed my eyes and tried not to think about it. I focused my attention on Jessica. I just looked at her in awe. She was so tiny. I thought about the man who was dragged down the hall by chains. I never wanted to see that happen to Jessica—ever. I smelled something unusual, like burned flesh. I looked out the same window again to see the demon and chained man. His hair was long, flesh like that of a burned victim, and hundreds of little sharp teeth. He was not even five feet tall. I didn’t take my eyes off of him. He slowly cocked his head to the side and started to smile. Then I saw an angel run from down the hallway and slice the demon’s head off. I jumped back in amazement. The angel then entered the room.
Did you see the demon?
he asked, as he put his sword in his sheath.
I answered, Yes, Madrix, I did.
He is already after your human, Jessica. They automatically battle for the soul as soon as they are born. You’ll get used to it,
he stated.
She’s not even an hour old and they’re after her?
I pointed out.
Yes, Tristan,
said Madrix with a slight chuckle in his voice.
You’ve got to be kidding me!
as I shook my head.
Ha! Remember, Tristan, you can’t mess with free will,
Madrix said, and then disappeared back to Heaven.
I took my place beside Jessica and her family. Jessica was asleep and looked so peaceful. This is such a blessing and is going to be a blast!
Jessica! Look! It’s your big brother!
her mother said, as Travis and his grandmother entered the room. Travis was a year and a half older than Jessica. I saw Aadesh walk in behind them. Aadesh is Travis’ angel.
Well, how does it feel, Tristan?
Aadesh asked as he approached me.
Great! I’m ready for this. Any evil that comes near her I will kill!
I replied with excitement.
Ha! I see your joy! It’s amazing that you get to watch them sleep, as well as play with and comfort them,
Aadesh informed me.
Then Aadesh walked over to Travis, who was sitting on the bed next to his mom looking at his baby sister.
Baby?
Travis pointed at Jessica.
Yes, that’s your baby sister, Jessica,
his mother told him. He had the biggest smile on his face.
Hi, Jessica,
her grandmother chimed in. At that time, Jessica’s grandmother’s angel, Daniela, burst through the door and seemed to be out of breath.
Hey, sorry. I was dealing with some demons on the second floor. Our friend, Amahad, was double-teamed,
she huffed. Aadesh and I just looked at her. She walked over to where Jessica’s grandmother was and looked down at Jessica. Awe. She’s beautiful,
Daniela said as she looked at Jessica. We all admired her. She was my human, and I must protect and guard her with all my Heavenly might.
~ BOOK ONE ~
Freshman Year
Chapter One
First Day of Freshman Year
Today is Jessie’s first day of high school. She was still asleep when her mother came in to wake her up. Jessie, honey, it’s time to get up. It’s your first day of high school,
her mother said through Jessie’s bedroom door. Jessie woke up and looked at the clock.
Oh no… high school!
Jessie groaned and rolled over. I could hear Jessie’s brother, Travis, getting ready for school. He liked school. Jessie… not so much.
Jessie, come on!
Travis yelled to her.
I’m coming!
Jessie got up, grabbed her clothes, and headed to the shower. I stood outside the door as she got ready for school. Wow! I can’t believe Jessie was already in high school. I remember her first year of kindergarten. She was knee high, blonde pig tails, and bright blue eyes. She wore a cute, blue, summer dress with black doll shoes. I remember when she looked back and waved goodbye to us and walked into class. I also remember her first year of middle school. She stuck to her brother like glue. I walked down the halls with her as she looked for a class. I sat next to her as she made friends. She was good at making friends. I knew that she wouldn’t have a problem with that, and she would make new ones. Jessie was going to Marion High School. It was a pretty big school with tons of opportunities. She had finished getting ready and headed to the living room where her brother was waiting on her.
Oh man, Bubby, I’m really nervous,
Jessie said as she straightened out her shirt.
Oh, Sis, you’ll be fine. High school is not that scary. Trust me.
Travis smiled and hugged his sister. He was an amazing big brother and always looked out for Jessie.
Jessie and Travis left for school. As we headed toward the school, Travis was giving her the 411 on high school. We’re going to meet Danny and them at the front of the school, and then I’ll walk you to class,
Travis informed.
Okay. Sounds good.
Jessie said with a nervous smile. Even to me, the ride to the school felt like it took forever. I was anxious for Jessie to get a new start and meet new people. We finally got there.
Oh, Bubby, I don’t think that I can do this.
Jessie grabbed her stomach as she heard it gurgle because she was nervous.
Travis slightly turned in his seat and replied, Sis, I am not going to let anything bad happen to you.
He looked at her; his face was so sincere and reassuring.
Alright. Let’s do this,
said Jessie as she got out of the car and I followed. We entered the school and met up with Danny and the others. Jessie smiled when she saw Danny. I knew that she liked him. Danny was Travis’ best friend. They met when Travis was a sophomore, and they got along really well together. Both Travis and Danny were good kids. They kind of went hand in hand together.
Hey, guys,
Travis said as he stood next to his friend, Nick. They all said Hi
in unison.
Hi, Danny,
Jessie blushed.
Hey,
he replied.
Danny then started talking to Travis. Jessie frowned. She was hoping for a little more excitement in his voice or a little more conversation, but he just said hey
like he really didn’t care. I felt bad for her. I started rubbing her back to comfort her.
Alright, Sis, what’s your first class?
Travis asked.
Uh… French, room 403,
said Jessie as she pointed to her schedule.
Alright. Let’s go,
Travis said.
All of us followed Travis. Jessie looked around at all of the students passing by. My goodness! There were a lot of evil spirits. There were demons all over the place… running down the halls… climbing the walls. They snarled as I walked past them, but I paid no mind to them because I was on a mission to get Jessie to class. We walked for a while until we came to a set of stairs. We walked up to the second floor, which was a square of white, painted brick. There were lockers in the middle, kind of like an island, and there were classrooms and lockers facing the island of other lockers. We turned the corner and there it was… Jessie’s first high school classroom.
Alright, Sis. I’m not that far away, but, if you can’t find me, find one of the guys or a friend who is going to the same class or a close class to your next one and find it together. If that doesn’t work, get a teacher. And, under no circumstances should you ask an upper classman. They will give you wrong answers,
Travis said as he hugged his sister.
Bubby, don’t leave.
Jessie wouldn’t let go of Travis.
Sis, I got to get to class. I will see you later.
Travis released himself from her clutch. Then Travis and the guys headed to their own classes. Jessie and I stood in the hallway for a while as we watched Travis and the others disappear down the hall. I saw Jessie close her eyes and say, I can do this.
She let out a big sigh and headed to her classroom. We walked in and saw kids talking, having fun, and catching up from the summer. Jessie and I took a seat in the back row. I figured she would sit there. She looked around the room and admired all the artwork that previous students did to liven up the classroom.
Hi, I’m Carrie,
a girl with brown hair and brown eyes said. It threw Jessie off her train of thought.
Hey. I’m Jessie,
as she introduced herself.
Are you a freshman?
Carrie asked, as she took her seat beside her.
Yeah. Are you?
Jessie asked
Yep,
Carrie said as she smiled. Jessie sat there wishing the day would go faster than it was. Then the teacher got up in front of the class. She spoke about rules and regulations of the classroom. To my surprise, I didn’t see any other angels. Oh man, these four years were going to be a bumpy ride.
