    Back To Christmas 1937

    Back To The Present Time

H er name was Sarah Parker and she was a 28 year old English teacher at Melrose

Elementary School in the small town of Grantsville Utah, located just a few miles outside of Salt Lake City Utah. It was about 4.00 P.M. in the afternoon when she heard a knock. She stood up and walked to the door. She looked out and no one was there. As she turned to return to her chair, where she had been preparing her lessons for the next day, she looked down and saw a box on the doorstep. Little did she know that that small delivery would change her life forever!

The package was wrapped in brown paper and addressed to her. As she bent down she thought she noticed a shadow across the street near an open field. She could feel that something or someone was watching her. Gently she picked up the parcel and turned and walked inside, locking the door behind her. She sat down on the rocking chair and dropped the parcel on her lap. She wondered if she should open it but her curiosity got the best of her and she decided to chance it.

Carefully removing the string she then slowly loosened the tape which held her unknown treasure. What she found looked like an old book. An inscription was hand written on the front. It read to my darling daughter.

Sarah instantly knew that it couldn’t be hers because her mother had passed away several years ago when Sarah was only 14 years old and all of her mother’s possessions had been given to her at that time. Still the inscription fascinated her and she opened the cover. Inside was a note addressed to Miss Sarah Parker. It was new, not like the rest of the book. She opened it and began to read the message. It read as follows.

Dear Miss Parker—I have delivered this parcel to you to fulfill a promise I made to a dear friend many years ago. I was asked by my host to deliver it only under the following circumstances.

    1. That your Mother and Father were no longer alive.

    2. That you were old enough to understand the contents.

    3. That I would personally watch as you put it in your own hands.

(She thought? The shadow across the street must have been the messenger.)

It continued, may I stress to you, with great fear for your life, that you read it only to yourself and keep the contents secret until you have finished the entire writings. What is written is true and should never fall into the wrong hands.

And so the saga of Sarah Parker began as she opened the first page. It started, with the inscription, to my darling daughter. As she read the pages her mind wandered back to the time of the writing which started some thirty years earlier. It started by saying, in the first person, like this.

On February 28th 1939 my water broke and I headed for the nearest midwife. An elderly woman could see I was in trouble and called 2 young gentlemen to assist me as I proceeded down the street. In a matter of fifteen minutes I was taken to her home and hurried into the delivery room. An hour later I was holding you in my arms. The minute I held you against my bosom I knew I had done the right thing in having you. It was at that point I promised myself to give you up to a family that could take care of you. Before giving birth I had met Mr. and Mrs. Parker who were good living, God fearing people, who always did their best to treat people right. They had just lost a 2 day old baby a few months before and I just felt this would be the place you should grow up. It’s not that I didn’t love you but the circumstances were very dire. As you continue to read you will understand the secrecy that caused this mystery.

    BACK TO CHRISTMAS 1937

M y friend Becky and I were so excited. For a couple of 17 year olds to be out on the town alone and away from our parents was something we had been looking forward to for some time. Becky’s father ran the Capitol Theater in down town Salt Lake City and he had given us tickets to the musical play Showboat which was being performed by a touring group from New Orleans.

The play was magnificent and the music was wonderful. Becky and I, got seats on the front row, of course, and were transfixed by the costumes and pageantry of the entire event. One of the lead players was a dark haired man and I said to Becky that is the most beautiful man I have ever seen She laughed and then said do you want to meet him after the show. I’m sure I replied! We can continued Becky my Dad will introduce us, all I have to do is ask him. Do you really think he would I gasped! All we can do is ask, she replied.

After the play ended Becky and I rushed to find her father. She said Dad can we meet the cast. Sure girls he replied we are having a reception downstairs and you are invited. We couldn’t believe it. Come on girls he said! Upon entering the banquet room we could see all kinds of pastries and a huge punch bowl at the end of the table. We looked at Becky’s Dad and he nodded, telling us in one motion that we could eat whatever we wanted. I reached down and grabbed a plate and piled it high with goodies and took a chair at the end of the room adjacent a small table. We noticed a few of the cast coming through the Green room doors. A couple of them still had on their costumes, others had changed into their street clothes. Becky and I sat transfixed as we watched them begin to mingle with the delegates from the region who had been invited to the reception.

After I had eaten more than I should have I decided a drink might just help wash it down. I walked back to the table with the punch bowl with my eyes still on the green room door. I was startled by a voice that said Excuse me Miss may I get you a something to drink. I swung around to find, not only a man holding a cup of punch toward me, but the very man I had drooled over while watching the play. Yes thank you sir I replied as I took it from his hand.

Um! You are from the play aren’t you I blubbered. Yes I am, my name is Richard Powell the 3rd and who might you be he asked? The 3rd I said in a puzzled way, where are 1st and 2nd I laughed. Then I realized that he was serious. I’m sorry I said stumbling over my words. My name Jayne Bolton and out here in the West I’ve never heard of any one who has a 2nd or 3rd behind his name. It’s OK he said, it’s so nice to meet someone close to my age he said.

I found myself staring at him. His eyes were the deepest blue I had ever seen. He was even more handsome up close than he was on the stage. His dark wavy hair was fairly long and upturned at the back. Are you alright he said as I snapped back into reality. Oh sorry again I said I so loved the show and the music and the costumes and oh just all of it I replied. Thank you he said I’m glad you enjoyed it. Do you attend plays often he continued. No, I replied this was my very first and I really loved it. My girlfriend’s Dad owns the theater and we got front row seats for the show tonight. Are you from New Orleans I asked? Born and raised there maam he answered. I love your accent Richard. It’s so different from us country folk out here. I like how you speak out West he said. We have been touring for 2 months now and this is our last week before we go home. How many more performances do you have left here in Salt Lake I asked? Five more he replied, our final performance is this Saturday. Are you going to see it again he asked? Oh I don’t think so I replied. The tickets are quite expensive, and I only came because Becky’s dad gave us free tickets.

Richard then said would you like to go for a walk Jayne I’ve never seen downtown Salt Lake City before. Well, I’m not sure I’m with my friend Becky. Well have
