In the recording studio, he worked with producers such as Dick Marx, Vern Dant, Walt Aldridge, among others. He has produced for both radio and television stations and directed sound for a mega church in the Kansas City

Simons real world experience allows him to walk a sound mixer through a successful rehearsal and live performance while warning of potential hazards. The book also contains chapters that detail solutions for dealing with the quirks of musicians and complaints from audiences. It also contains a chapter focusing on the character qualities that are necessary to succeed behind the board.

      Introduction

      Take a pinch of music; add a dash of technology—and what do you have? A screeching, ear-damaging mess if you don’t know what you’re doing.

      This little book is for those I affectionately refer to as The Weekend Warriors—those dedicated souls who, though they’re not professionals, pour themselves into the soul chemistry of sound mixing.

      What is soul chemistry? Well, music reaches the soul like almost nothing else on earth. And technology has given us the ability to mix up music—almost like a chemist mixes chemical elements. Some musical concoctions —like some chemical compounds—just plain stink. And some are even dangerous. But, in the hands of a well-practiced mixer, technology can do wonders for music.

      So, if you love music like I love music, then put on your lab coat and rubber gloves (metaphorically), and let’s start mixing it up.

      CHAPTER ONE

      Simon Who?

      I’ll begin by explaining that there’s a difference between a sound mixer and an audio engineer. Audio engineers understand all the complex electronic schematics of the tools we use to enhance sound. They’re like the real lab geeks. (No offense engineers; we mixers couldn’t do our thing without you.) The engineers know all the technical ins and outs of the gadgets we mixers use to mix.
