About this ebook

Love can be subtle or cinematic; a long engaged whisper in private moments or a public shouting from the rooftops.

Relationships affect us on many levels. One can be filled with the presence of the other person, or one can be with someone, yet very much alone. The impact we have on others can be calculated or serendipitous, superficial or profound, but is never isolated. That butterfly beating its wings in that South American rain forest is you and I.

This book is a collection of poems about love and loss; the joys of romance and the anguish of loneliness and self-doubt. These poems probe our humanity. When the time comes, the question becomes-will we know how to respond?

    To my loving wife, Sherlie,

    and newborns, William Wright

    and Katherine Kayleigh—

    a family complete.

    I am the Sun

    I am the Sun.

    You are the Moon.

I crash ionized atoms on your surface.

    You are hardly fazed.

My solar flares could consume you,

    but they don’t.

    You barely react.

    Serene, stoic, aloof—

these are words ascribed to you.

    I know better.

    Ripped from your mother Earth

eons ago, you still tug at men’s hearts—

    pulling us like the tide

    toward you,

    close but not too close.

    Rising above fading daylight,

    cool against the blackness

    of the approaching night,

    you watch me drop

    helplessly, inevitably.

    The fields pull me

    into their waves of harvest.

    The mountains block my view.

    The oceans swallow me whole.

My image, my fire flattening out

    blushes crimson, smoldering.

    My violent outbursts are pointless.

    The horizon envelops me.

I look up to your face—

    placid, powdered white.

    I envy your nights.

    Your Song

Listen to the music between the notes—

    the sounds that I write—

the words that escape from my pen—

rising, filling the air, changing keys with each new song

Listen to these words of love

    that set the beat,

    keep the time,

    and form the notes

    that only you can hear

    Equilibrium clouds—

    whispers of white, suspended,

    neither rising nor falling

    —equilibrium—
