INTRODUCTION
IN N EW TESTAMENT TIMES, THERE DID NOT SEEM TO BE ANY DOUBT that Jesus said He was God. The Jewish leaders wanted to stone Him because He claimed to be God (John 8:57-59, John 10:29-33). The high priest understood Jesus to claim that He was God (Matthew 26:62-65). And Peter said that Jesus was Lord and Christ (Acts 2:36).
But nearly 300 years later Arius, a priest in Alexandria, Egypt, taught that Jesus did not always exist. Arius said that Jesus was created by God, and although Jesus had divine attributes, He Himself was not God. More than 300 bishops gathered at the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D., and after prayer and discussion stated in the Nicene Creed that Jesus is very God of very God, begotten, not made.
Although the Council of Nicaea attempted to settle the matter, belief in the deity of Christ continued to be questioned. In 1964, the North of England Evangelical Trust, an interdenominational group of ministers and laymen, recognized that the doctrine is being attacked at the popular level by people such as Jehovah’s Witnesses, and intellectually by such de-mythologizing theologians as Rudolf Bultmann and Paul Tillich,
and decided to publish a little booklet stating the case for The Deity of Christ.
Written by William J. Martin, Rankin Senior Lecturer in Hebrew and Ancient Semitic Languages at the University of Liverpool, with help from F.F. Bruce, Ryland Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at Manchester University, the booklet said it was by F.F.B and W.J.M.
When it was published a few months later as an article in the December 18, 1964, issue of Christianity Today, the magazine identified the authors, whom it described as two prominent British laymen.
Moody Press in the United States published an edition in 1974.
This compilation contains the book from the Moody Press edition. Combined with it are three articles by F.F. Bruce first published in Precious Seed, a British magazine that encourages the study of Scriptures, the practice of New Testament Church principles and to stimulate interest in Gospel work.
Evidence of the deity of Christ is found in both the Old and New testaments and clearly presented here. The claims of Christ to deity are expressed in irreducible matter-of-fact language. Either He was a fraud, or He was God. There is no middle position.
The Apostle Paul states clearly, If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
(Romans 10:9, nlt).

The Deity of Christ is published under the Kingsley Books imprint of F.F. Bruce Copyright International.
When Robert Hicks, a British book publisher, realized that many of the works of F.F. Bruce were not readily available, he wanted to correct that situation. Of the nearly 60 books and hundreds of magazine articles written by the Dean of Evangelical Scholarship,
Robert felt many of those not in print could be presented in a visually appealing way for the modern reader.
After receiving the support of F.F. Bruce’s daughter, Sheila Lukabyo, Robert enlisted the help of Larry Stone, an American publisher. Together they contacted nearly twenty of F.F. Bruce’s publishers. Some of Bruce’s books are being reformatted into printed booklets suitable for evangelism and Bible study in universities and in church groups. Many of Bruce’s printed books as well as collections of articles never before appearing in book form are being made available as reasonably-priced ebooks that can be easily distributed around the world.
The purpose of F.F. Bruce Copyright International is to encourage an understanding of Professor Bruce’s teaching on the Scripture, to encourage his spirit of humility in approaching the Bible, and encourage academic scholarship among today’s evangelical students and leaders.

INTRODUCTION
THE DOCTRINE OF THE DEITY OF C HRIST IS THE KEYSTONE of the great arch of the Christian faith. Remove it and the whole arch would collapse. It is not surprising, therefore, that most of the major heresies masquerading as representatives of Christianity tacitly or openly deny this doctrine. Attempts to deny the deity of Christ have caused havoc in Christendom by undermining churches and theological colleges and Christian organizations. And today, a denial of the deity of Christ is propagated not only by liberal theologians, but also by unschooled simple people, who, in the naive belief that they have found something novel and revolutionary, peddle it from door to door. The memorized verses that they quote are largely the same as those that were first used by the great archheretic Arius, who died in the early part of the fourth century ( A.D . 336).
