Jo Carey
Jo Carey grew up in the Midwest but her curiosity and gypsy-spirit has kept her on the move. She's lived in eight US states and spent three years living in Ireland. She has always loved creature movies, so creatures and bugs often show up in her books. Jo, a former information security compliance guru, writes fast-paced, character-driven stories in a variety of genres from medical thrillers to space operas and cozy mysteries. Her novels are filled with humor, romance, and sometimes creatures or aliens, or maybe even all of the above. She often builds her stories around a strong female lead character surrounded by plenty of hunky male heroes. Jo's been under fire on a golf course and climbed out the roof of an elevator in the Netherlands. Life hasn't been boring. Now residing in Texas, setting often plays a huge role in her stories. Jo was intrigued by the League of Planetary Systems, a world her husband, Frank, created for his science fiction books, and she now writes mysteries and other types of tales sets in that world. Jo was bitten by a cat, a fire ant, and a snake, before succumbing to the bite of the writing bug.

Cave Terror - Jo Carey
CHAPTER ONE
Trent,
Glyn screamed, There's something on my back. Get it off.
She was hopping around wiggling her shoulders trying to dislodge whatever it was she felt on her back.
He walked up behind her. There's nothing... Oh. My. God. It's huge, Babe. Don't move. Stand still, I think I can shoot it with the rifle.
Shoot it? Are you crazy?
Glyn screamed. Just brush it off. What are you waiting for?
There's more of them coming,
he said, pointing over her shoulder.
She screamed.
Wake up, Glyn. You're having a nightmare,
Lisa said, sitting down on the edge of the bed. What was it this time?
Tarantulas.
I'll go make coffee. It's almost time to get up anyway if you want to be ready to go when Trent gets here.
Lisa made coffee while Glyn showered and got dressed. She pulled out the backpack Trent bought her and the list of what she should pack. It was only a weekend trip, but she'd never been camping before.
Are you sure about this?
Lisa asked as she stood in the doorway sipping her coffee. She held out a mug for Glyn.
I'm sure. It'll be fun. Just the four of us in the desert for a couple of days.
You hate the outdoors.
You're right, but I definitely don't hate Trent.
So, you're going with Trent's brother and his girlfriend, right?
Yeah. They're cool. It'll be fun.
You and Trent will have your own tent, right?
There was a knock on their apartment door. Can you let him in? I'm almost finished.
Trent was only a couple of years older than Glyn but, while she was in college getting her master's degree, Trent had served in the United States Air Force. Now he was working as a pilot for a small airline flying out of El Paso.
Hi, Lisa. Is she ready?
Almost,
Lisa said. Take care of her out there. You know she's not really much of an outdoors person.
I'll try to make sure she has a good time,
he said as Glyn walked in with her backpack. Good morning, gorgeous.
He hugged her and gave her a lingering kiss. Everyone's in the car. Let's get going.
Trent threw Glyn's pack in the back of the Jeep and opened the back door for her. Everyone said hi as Dalton pulled out of the parking lot and back onto the road. Glyn snuggled into Trent's side, and he put his arm around her shoulders.
Where are we going exactly?
Glyn asked.
Some caves just on the edge of White Sands Missile Range. I'm gathering some data on the bat population,
Dalton said. He was a PHD in Biology whose research focused on bats. He was on faculty at New Mexico State University, and Glyn did an internship as his lab assistant. She met Trent when he came to take Dalton to lunch.
Ugh. I hate bats,
Glyn said.
You and most other people,
Dalton said. How did Trent talk you into this, Glyn? You hate the outdoors.
I know how much Trent loves camping and hiking, so I said I'd give it a try. Just keep the creepy crawlies away from me.
I promise, Babe. I'll keep you safe,
Trent said, pulling her close.
CHAPTER TWO
This isn't so bad is it?
Trent asked after they'd been hiking for a few minutes.
So far so good.
Glyn was wearing cargo shorts, hiking boots, and a white tank top. She had put on a high-SPF sun screen and wore an NMSU cap with her blonde ponytail pulled through the opening in the back.
Trent walked behind her enjoying the view of her butt as she walked. He still had trouble believing someone like Glyn would have any interest in him. She was young, smart, and beautiful. She was way out of his league, but he was going to enjoy it until she figured it out.
Dalton and Mandy were leading the way through the desert to caves where a large population of bats had taken up residence. Dalton had been gathering population data on the bats as part of his research into the spread of White Nose Syndrome in US bat populations.
Three of the four were experienced hikers and backpackers. Only Glyn was out of her element in the dry desert landscape outside Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Dalton and Mandy stopped in the trail and were photographing a Giant Agave bug.
