      Dearest Marry Me,

      Let’s call it a truce. I miss you. I want to reach out to you and touch you. But you are so far away from me. This isn’t the way you and I should live our lives. In fact, we should be smiling, laughing, and staring into each other’s eyes. Everyday making new experiences with each other. Now what am I supposed to do with the rest of my life without your glances and your adoration. The dark stillness of your frame lurking around me reminding me that I am a woman and you are a man. Your presence sweeping over my mind, body and emotions baptizing me with your approval and honor.

      But what is all this worth if you are not mines and I am not yours? I must admit I thought we were on our way. What way you might ask? You know, the way of love. First the talks, then evolving to friends, then dating, then finally commitment and marriage. It’s the way of love.

      What are we running from? Love is what will set us free. Love is what will heal us and remove our pain. Our love, black love, will preserve our children, our health and our destiny. I was certain it was only about what you should give me or offer me, but I was wrong. It’s all about what I can offer you, my love at no cost, no expectations and no judgment. So, will you let me love you?

      Yea Forgive Me,

      I got your letter. You never were one to have a problem with words. Sometimes there were too many words coming out your mouth. It would often make me decide not to be bothered with you rather than sort through what I think you mean. You see, when you saw me, when I first caught your attention. I had already been watching you. My eyes said, Yeah. But my mind said, Wait for it. Let’s see what she’s really like.

      Listening to you showed me your ability to persuade many, yet you ain’t no different from any other black woman. You would always put these words out there. I knew what you were doing. You were only using those words to bait me. So, I wouldn’t say nothing. I’m not stupid. I know what I want, and I know what I don’t want. I'm not looking to be caught or owned.

      PS I don’t use the L Word. It’s not even a discussion.

      Oh Marry Me,

      I was excited to receive your letter. Thank you for writing me back. I understand your position about my behavior. I admit I was uninformed and wrong, but never intentionally hurtful. I didn't know how to be me with you neither did I know if I should. I don’t know how this is to play out. Yet I had to get it all out and expose my hand. I can’t reason what the right answer is to give you or what it will take to bring us to the table again. I couldn’t see past my pain nor nurse yours while I was still fearful. But now I understand that I am merely a woman and a prisoner of hope concerning you.

      Although I haven’t seen many examples of black love, I have seen it, I know it’s possible. Why can’t it be possible between us? Why should I be put to shame for admiring and desiring my black counterpart as if our unity is forbidden? It’s not fair. In all fairness, my childhood stories never showed me nor told me that Sanquetta and Tyrone lived happily ever after. It’s as if society told me that a black couple wasn’t supposed to succeed. Think about it, when is the last time you’ve seen a happy ending, or a black couple married forever?

      So, I’ve drawn the conclusion, for black couples to be happy, we must write our own story and determine our own ending. We must go Huxetable-style. The most important lesson I’ve learned is that I’m not fit to lead in the matters of love. I’ve been deceived, corrupted, hood-winked, pumped, filled and brainwashed with so many Disney love stories and Lifetime promises that I wouldn’t know what love, or a good guy looked like even if it was just across the street. So, do us a favor, you take the lead. You can teach me. You know I can be a great student. I got several degrees, learning is what I do best. So, why don’t you teach me, and I'll listen. I can be a silent partner. If you’re willing to teach. I’m willing to learn. Besides, it would be considered unfair, unethical even, to be tested on material that I’ve never been taught. So, can we start over?
