I am an explorer at heart. As a boy, growing up in Southern Africa, my mother told me, I may explore only as far into the bush as I could see the roof of the house. So I took a long rope and explored until I could see the tip of the roof. Tied the rope to a tree and explored further, until the rope ran out. This practical creativity I bring to everything I do. As an adult explorer (yes I like to travel), I am fascinated with finding potential and inner strength in the people I engage with. I found an outlet for this passion, first as a lecturer in Sports Psychology but lately as a Profesional Certified Business and Leadership Coach. The world I explore now is the field of Neuroscience and Emotions. My first book "Thinking about Thinking"; is an introduction to meta-thinking. I plan to explore emotions next. Since 2006 I have enjoyed the privilege of being present with a good number of individuals as they transformed their lives. They moved from stuck mundane surviving to exhilarating optimal thriving. I picture this experience as me sitting in the shade of a tree, and as people’s journeys cross mine, they join me in the shade out of the burning sun. This represents their current situation. Together we spend significant moments as they allow me to think with them about the meaningfulness of their lives and the direction of their purpose. As they leave after the brief rest in the shade, they walk away with a confident step, believing in their strength.
I hope this book will reach more of those people who want to transform from living a pauper’s life to that of royalty. It is written for those who have had enough of being stuck and want to fly with the strength of their wings.
I see this book as an introduction. An introduction to the reader’s ability to start creating positive change for themselves. Behind the themes discussed here are vast fields to explore. I encourage you to explore beyond this book. Hopefully this introduction can then be left behind as childhood is left behind. I often refer to authors and books that I suggest you read. These books give more detailed descriptions of the concepts discussed. Their authors have influenced my opinions. I hope that by reading them you can be further enriched.
I also tend to simplify beautiful complex concepts. Bear with me, please. I know I leave out stuff. My intent is to make the concepts useful. A significant moment in my life formed this drive for useful concepts. I spent two years in Belgium where I worked with a roof layer. I was just out of university and freely shared with him my theories on how life is supposed to be. The roof layer, also named Herman, asked me: But how are you going to apply this in your life?
I could not answer him, and from this question sprung my drive to find practical usefulness for my theories.
So be assured that what I share in this book I have applied in my life. I also own up to the way I’ve presented the concepts. According to how Herman sees and experiences the world. My expectation is that you will go beyond my viewpoint. Use it as a starting point for your journey in which you come to know your world more intimately.
In the past decade, working with my Business and Life Coaching clients in co-creating their vision, I have noticed an emerging pattern. In one way or another they have found value in the stories, tools, and arguments I shared. I offer this pattern in the book.
Although I try and make the argument flow logically with the simple and powerful ABC think tool, you might follow a different sequence. In the chaos of life some elements make sense and are relevant at different times in your life. Use as appropriate.
Please see this book as a coaching conversation that introduces you to your thinking. These concepts made a difference in the lives of my clients; I hope they do so for you, the reader, as well.
I have structured the book simply, trying to be as succinct as possible. AT the start of each argument, I placed a blink. The blink will give you a compact overview. You can then read the content of each chapter. The Introduction is about the foundational departure point and the core ABC thinking tool. In six chapters I discuss the three elements of the ABC thinking and expand them with other thinking tools. If you feel something is missing, please explore by reading the recommended books or feel free to contact me. I would love to explore further with you.
On a more personal level, I wrote this book, mostly, lest I forget. I have always been a bit absentminded, but recently I have realized that I am starting to forget valuable lessons. Writing helps me remember and I hope that by remembering I can be of value to you.

Happiness is life’s ultimate goal no matter how we define it. Your definition of success deserves a closer look. Does it make you happy?

• Action is behavior that can be summarized on a continuum.
• Our genes dictate 50% of our behavior.
• Of the other 50%, 10% is our conditioning, and 40% comprises of the choices we make.
• Most people are on autopilot and only live up to 60% of their capacity.
• You want to live intentionally at 100% of your capacity.
Everybody wants to be successful. Each one of us pursues an experience of achieving something worthwhile. We define what that something is in a million ways. And no matter what that definition is, the expectation is that this will bring us happiness. To be happy (successful) is a normal human pursuit.
Happiness is, therefore, the ultimate goal.[1]
To be happy and successful we must know one thing. Successful living depends on your taking action. Success is not something that comes on its own; we create it. We can dream of success, but it is only when we act that we shift the boundaries of our world to include the desired happiness. What you do makes you successful.
Not all action leads to success. It is also true that all of us are busy in one way or another, but not necessarily happy because of what we do. If that were so, the whole world would be happy. As human beings, we easily fall into the trap of busyness and chase our tails. Many people tread the proverbial hamster wheel, running but not getting anywhere. How then can action open up happiness? And how does this action differ from the one on the hamster wheel?
The answer is simply that the quality of the action counts. The quality of our action is determined by the quality of our thinking about the action.[2]
To pursue actions that result in your success we need to look at your thinking about your actions. This is at the heart of this book. Thinking about your thinking (about the quality of your actions). We will use the boomerang effect. Seemingly throw our attention in the wrong direction, but eventually, we will hit the target, and the benefits will return into our hands.
Action is behavior and can be placed on a continuum. Let’s say the whole of the continuum makes up 100%.

Our genes dictate 50% of our behavior. I am not referring to those genes that dictate the color of your hair or eyes. I am referring to the genes that drive behavior.
These behavior-driving genes are an object of numerous scientific studies. We can assume that the last words have not yet been spoken, so for our conversation I would like to keep things simple. Genes are the fundamental building blocks of being human and are responsible for all base behavior. Base behavior is all behavior that leads to survival of the species. We could categorize this behavior into three behavioral agenda points. At the most basic level we humans are concerned with three Fs: Food (What will I eat?), Fear (Will I be safe?) and Fornication (With whom can I procreate?). These three agendas might sound simplistic, but they present in subtle and complex ways. Why do you think beautiful models are used to sell anything from cars to Caribbean holidays?
Ten percent is our conditioning. Conditioning is everything you know up to this point in time. All your experiences, everything your parents and school teachers have taught you. All the socially acceptable behavior promoted by your culture, government or media. Everything you have figured out for yourself, everything, even part of your personality, is captured in this 10%. It is huge.
Now turn around and look at the vastness of the 40% left to choice.
