Chapter One
Elle picked up her phone from her mum's kitchen table and glanced at the screen. Her pulse quickened. Damn, it was 3:20 PM already. She'd ruin everything if she didn't get a move on.
She jumped up, gathered the crumpled tissues and shoved them into the garbage. Then she ran the faucet and splashed some water onto her face. She been crying for ages and she bet that her face was blotchy but there was no time now to cover it with makeup.
Her phone lit up and began to vibrate across the table. Elle grabbed it, sat back down and pressed the Facetime button. A woman's face—Cora's face?—appeared on the screen. She was in her forties and was haughty-looking with elaborately styled hair. She sat in an office. On the wall behind her, hung rows of framed CDs.
Is that Elle?
Cora asked.
Elle nodded and held the phone higher, so that she didn't have a double chin.
Cora. Cora Fairchild,
Cora said. How great to meet you in person, so to speak.
She gave a haw-haw laugh. Now I've read your resume. It's super. I'd like to tell you more about the position but first, let's hear about you.
She held up a piece of paper, which Elle guessed was her resume, and studied it with narrowed eyes. Her eyelashes were brittle with mascara.
I see you're working as a nanny,
she said.
Elle was smiling so hard that her face hurt.
That's right,
she said. I love my job.
So why do you want to switch positions?
Elle flushed.
She'd guessed that Cora was going to ask this question, which was why she'd practiced the answer several times in the mirror. What she wanted to say was that since she'd found out about Henry, she needed to leave the city—and fast.
Well,
she began. This was proving much harder than it had been in front of the mirror. Of course I love London but it's becoming so busy these days. And I've always dreamed of living in the country. I've worked as a live-in nanny many times, which is like being a housekeeper.
Of course, of course.
Cora was smiling and nodding. I've checked your references and they're great.
Elle's heart skipped. Wow, Cora had done a reference check already. Did that mean that she was going to offer her the job?
You know the position's in Devon?
Cora said.
I love Devon,
Elle replied, not that she'd ever been.
There's just one thing,
Cora continued. Something I didn't mention in the advert. I didn't want to attract the wrong kind of person. You'll be working for someone famous, so I would need you to sign a confidentially agreement before you started.
A famous person?
Reece Ryan.
Elle gave a gasp, which she tried to change into a cough. Wow. Was Cora serious? Reece Ryan was only the hottest singer to have ever walked the planet.
Reece won't be at house,
Cora said.
Elle felt her happiness dip a little.
Chatsworth Hall is his holiday home,
Cora continued. In fact, he's only seen it once, just before he bought it years ago. He plans to sell it when the market picks up.
If it's empty, why does he need a housekeeper?
Cora sighed. Because vandals keep breaking in. Reece thinks it might be better if the place were occupied. So would you like the job?
Oh my God. Really?
Cora gave a watery smile.
There was a pause. Cora stared at Elle through the
