      Chapter One

      Glenn was quieter than a sinner on Sunday as we drove my jeep down Miller’s dirt road. I looked over for a clue to where my almost boyfriend spent his time lately.

      His shoulder length black hair covered most of his face. Everything uncovered was obscured by the dark evening night. Even with a full moon I couldn’t read his expression. Not that it mattered much. I still didn’t find out where he’s been hiding most nights. The constant squeezing of his hands together was a damn obvious clue something was up.

      Glenn and I had been friends since we were a tractor tire high. Growing up, I was the one that defended him. I was what folks around here call a big girl. It’s a polite way to say you aren’t thin. If there’s one thing we Southerners do well, it’s be polite – at least to your face.

      Growing up, a skinny guy like Glenn and a girl like me was just too much temptation for ridicule. I was bigger than most males then and I’m big now. Six foot two, and a size thirteen shoe as my Grandma would say. A lot of woman and able to swing a fist deterred most folks from making fun of me.

      Glenn was a good six inches shorter than me and didn’t have the physique to defend himself back then. I still saw the scrawny little kid sometimes, but damn if he didn’t turn out all right – especially lately. Guess he figured I couldn’t always be there for him. He hit the weights, took self-defense, and got a nice tight swimmer’s body. That gave him self-confidence, and we dated for a while. Then he broke it off.

      Figure he found another girl, but I never met her. Maybe I just wasn’t his type. I ain’t sad about it. There are men that love a curvy girl. If not him, someone will.
