Preface to Domain Name 360
Today, every business needs a domain name; from the startup to the mega-company – and every individual and enterprise in between. That’s just one of the reasons this book was written – there is incredible demand, but there is also a genuine need.
The issue most business professionals and brands have related to the acquisition, management and sale of domain names, is that they simply don’t know enough. Every day at Website Magazine (which is fortunate to occupy a unique vantage point at the intersection of technology, business and marketing) domain names enter our view which would force any serious Web professional to scratch their virtual head, wondering what, exactly, was the reasoning behind a specific domain name choice and purchase.
Fortunately, those participating in the domain name space (the many individuals I’ve encountered as this book was written over the past few years) are incredibly supportive, insightful and knowledgeable, providing a great deal of guidance and useful information to help everyone (myself included) make the most of this key aspect of the digital experience.
By reading Domains 360 from Website Magazine, I hope you’ll become as excited about the opportunity in domain names as are those you will learn from in this book, and as hopeful as I am about the future of this amazing industry as well.

: INTRODUCTION :
Domain Names 360
Millions and millions of domain names have been registered since the inception of the commercial Internet.
The official number of active domains (versus inactive), of course, changes every day with new registrations being initiated and expiring domain names falling out of digital view. In general, however, that data point (the total number of actively registered domains) has remained relatively steady over the past few years, but it is not exactly trending upwards. And why, exactly, is that? Well, that’s why you’re reading Domains 360.
The market for domain names is undoubtedly massive (everyone seems to have at least one domain name), and by all accounts, is unlikely to slow or disappear as some have suggested in the years to come. Today, over 288 million domain names are registered (Verisign, Q4 2014).
Even with the soaring popularity of mobile applications and social networks (which are demanding increasingly greater attention from consumers and the brands that pursue them), domain names play a prominent and vital role in the digital and even non-digital experience today. Without question, domain names will remain that way if not grow dramatically in the years to come. And why is that? In essence, because domain names are the means by which consumers discover and understand what a brand (or product) is and, more importantly, what it means to them personally. In many ways, domain names are the heart and soul of the Internet.
As you might expect, where there is current demand and potential there will be those who see an opportunity to profit from the continued growth and its future development. The reason you’re reading this book (either in e-book, print or Web form) is because you also see the value that domain names bring to ideas, brands, enterprises, and people in the predominantly digital environment of today. The result of this interest (an interest which has been present since the first domains were registered more than 20 years ago) is that an incredibly exciting industry has emerged surrounding the buying and selling (as well as management) of domain names. There are rules and regulations to know, however, and tricks and techniques (i.e. best practices) that Internet professionals (novice and expert alike) must not only employ, but master, in order to ensure their success in the immediate present as well as the far distant future. Let’s get started before we all fall behind the virtual curve.
A Roadmap to Success with Domains
As an existing or aspiring Internet businessperson (at Website Magazine the phrase that is used with some regularity is ‘Net professional), the importance of domain names to an underlying business success cannot be overstated. Domain names can be used to convey the value, quality and intricacies of a brand, to develop steady and often impressive streams of residual income, and (in many ways the primary focus of this book) to use as a vehicle for investment – a genuine asset of the highest digital order. If that last part escaped you, Domains 360 will help you learn how to profit from the acquisition, ownership, management and eventual sale of domain names and the brands that are built in conjunction with them. It’s a tall order, but that is what the industry needs and that’s our aim.
Domains 360 provides a roadmap for success, providing not just an explanation of why domain names are important to the digital ecosystem or how to profit from an investment in them, but also incredibly practical guidance on how to choose them and powerful insights on ways in which you can make the most of domain name assets while they are under your control – and the best part is that it comes from Website Magazine’s community of ‘Net professionals (people just like you) that have gone through the same experiences. And to get you off on the right foot, Domains 360 also highlights some of the most exciting domain name related companies in operation on the Web today (placed throughout the actual book, in a special resource appendix at the back, and bundled in a special section available online which provides details on each company and solution) providing information on services related to the day to day of domaining - the purchase, management and sale of these important assets.
What makes Website Magazine qualified to produce a book on domain names? With over one decade on the Web and nearly 400,000 subscribers to our print publication, we are fortunate to be positioned in a way that enables us to see the good and the bad (as well as the ugly sometimes) related to the domain name choices of our Internet professional readers. We are also privileged to have numerous highly qualified contacts in the domain name industry (as well as many others in the digital space) that can, in essence, help our community understand the incredibly interesting practice of domaining by showing and explaining how the entire ecosystem of the domain name industry works – something that would take years – if not decades – to master on one’s own.
Without question, the domain name space is an exciting one – full of potential and opportunity. Domains 360 will provide readers with a guide, a roadmap if you will, which can be used to accelerate their success when it comes to buying and selling domain names for profit. While far from a foolproof approach, following the framework provided by Domains 360 will give you the ideas and motivation you need to accelerate success with your domain name investments and initiatives, whether you are just starting out or have decades of digital experience behind you.
Readers are encouraged to join us at Domains360book.com to continue the conversation, keep learning from your industry peers and share your own experiences in the pursuit of ‘Net success.
Enjoy Domains 360 from Website Magazine and remember, the next profitable domain name is now within your reach!
