Springtime 1988
Love Blossoms
Spring in Texas. A time when this hot, sometimes inhospitable land shines. The bluebonnets and the evening primroses grace the highways and the whole world turns green for a few weeks before the summer dries everything to brown. It is a time for being outdoors. It is a time of new beginnings.
I was up early this beautiful May Saturday morning. I was going to the Brazos River to meet Ken and some of his friends who had camped out for the weekend. Something was beginning to stir in my heart toward this man who had become my buddy. We had been friends for three years now, but I could tell my feelings were growing stronger for him. I wasn’t at all sure if those feelings were reciprocated.
As I pulled up to the campsite, I thought nothing of the fact that I had on white tennis shoes and white swim suit cover-up, or that it would look out of place for this rugged campsite setting. But Ken noticed. As I came down the riverbank, he looked up and said, Becky, you’re too cute!
My heart melted at those words. I could tell for the first time that he saw me as more than just a buddy.
I waded through the shallows of the Brazos River and watched as Ken and his friends jabbed pathetically with homemade spears into the clear water, trying to catch the huge carp swimming around us. We then went to a nearby lake and unloaded our friends’ boat to fish with more hope of catching something.
As we rode around the lake that day, I knew in my heart, that something inside of Ken was changing too. We had sat for countless hours at a time, talking and sharing about everything, but today was different. My friend, Ken, had taken on a new perspective. He was someone I was very much interested in and I knew those same changes were taking place in him too.
I wanted the day to go on forever and ever, but as evening approached, we pulled the boat out of the water and headed home. I realized I hadn’t laughed that much in a long time. To make the day go further, I invited everyone home with me for dinner, but only Ken accepted. It was a fitting end to a glorious day as we cooked out that evening and sat on the patio talking over
