Thanks to my friends, both new and old, who've helped me along the way. A special thanks to Taylor, without whom I doubt this piece would've been finished. And finally to my mother, for always being supportive of me and my stories, even if you don't like them. I love you.
I.
There were no warning signs before it happened. No doors opened or closed themselves, the lights didn't flicker. But in a house with two teenage boys, a pre-teen girl, a toddler and two feuding parents not even the sound of footsteps in the night was out of place.
The first incident happened on a boring Tuesday night.
For once the hectic household was quiet; empty except for twelve year old Marie who was stuck babysitting Tammy.
Her step father, a jerk named Curt, had gone out to meet his woman on the side. That's not what he said of course. He made up some excuse; Marie didn't bother to listen to it. She wasn't stupid. Neither was her mom who left to follow him after thirty minutes of pacing and crying.
As soon as her older brother Brandon and step brother Jerry realized that there was no adult supervision they took off for the railroad tracks where scoring something to drink, smoke, or huff was easier than dealing with their messed up home life.
The first time she went down there with them she was scared. Until she noticed all of the attention she was getting. No one was yelling at her or calling her names; they just wanted to hang out with her and tell her how pretty she was. It wasn't long until she was pretty popular down there, especially among the older boys.
Seeing as it was Tammy's fault that she couldn't go have fun with the boys, Marie locked the baby in her room so she could watch her TV shows in peace.
Tammy was screaming and banging on the door, begging to be let out.
I gotta go potty!
She cried out.
Marie was beyond annoyed. The volume of the television was already up as loud as it would go and she could still hear the little brat.
That's what the Lego box is for!
Marie yelled back as she stood up from the couch.
Tammy responded with a wail of despair.
Marie flew over to the locked door and slammed her fists against the wood. If you don't cut it out I'm going to take away your light bulb!
It was a low blow she knew. Tammy, like most little kids, was terrified of the dark. It didn't matter than it was a common fear, it still aggravated Marie.
Everyone always fussed over Tammy either because she was the baby, or beautiful, or sweet, or blond, or smart. Marie knew all of these things were secondary. The real reason everyone bent over backwards for the kid was because she was the only kid who shared both Curt's and her mom's blood.
Jerry was Curt's kid but by a different woman. Marie and Brandon both had the same dad, a man who ignored their existence unless it was convenient for him.
Despite being in their lives since Marie was Tammy's age, Brandon and Marie were absolutely forbidden from calling Curt dad. The penalty was a smack across the face.
The physical differences within the family spoke volumes. Both adults had dark hair with strong Mediterranean features. Jerry was a clone of Curt, almost as if God had photocopied the original. Brandon was lucky enough to have the same blond hair as Tammy,
