Gail Hedglin is not only a racist, she is also blissfully unaware of, or possibly resists, the use of grammar.

Author

INTRODUCTION

With over 35 years of experience in all facets of the car business, the author of this book is going to give you an inside look of what dealers want you to know, want you to hear, and what they DON’T want you to know.

Do you think you got a good deal on the last car you purchased? Did the salesperson say he or she was giving you a discount? Did they give you what you wanted for your trade? Did you get the payment that you wanted or was it $250 a month higher than you can afford? Did you receive a free warranty? Were you in and out in a short amount of time?

I’ll bet you had to pay up to $3500 for a warranty, had to wait around for hours and they didn’t give you anything for your trade in (except on paper). I also bet you didn’t even buy the car you came in for. When you finally got back home instead of being excited, you felt sick. Sound familiar? I hear this all the time from buyers. Don’t feel bad. You are not alone.

In the forever changing automobile industry there are new programs for financing, cash incentives, and terrible warranty terms and conditions. In the end, the wheel is still round and a car is still just a car. Auto dealers sell them and you buy them. My intention is to educate you to see all of the gimmicks, promotions, and scams that the dealers are using to lure you to their dealership and ultimately, buy a car. Face it, Honda didn’t make just one Civic and Chevy didn’t make just one Silverado. You can go to any dealer and find the same vehicle. I will show you how to find the one dealer that you can trust to tell you the truth, and treat you fairly.

How often have you heard the advertisements offering you $10000.00 more for your trade, or no money down, or we will pay off your trade no matter what it’s worth? I could go on and on with these ridiculous ad’s, but you probably have already heard all of them. My question is do dealers really think the consumer is this ignorant? Of course they do or else they would not spend the kind of money it takes to produce them. After reading and applying what you read in this book, you will no longer fall in their trap or take their bait. Trust me you will be a car-buying guru!

For most, buying a car is the second largest investment in their life. Many people make the huge mistake of buying on emotions. Some women make the purchase based upon how they like the looks of the salesman or because they flirted with them or asked them out on a date. Boy, will that one cost you! I am going to give you a step by step process of what to do, what to avoid, and how to be SMARTER THAN A CAR DEALER.

CHAPTER I

KNOW YOUR CREDIT

a. Understanding your credit file

So you have made the decision to purchase a vehicle. There are many steps to consider before buying so that you don’t make a huge mistake. The first is to understand your credit file. Some people may ask why? It is important for many reasons, the first being that many dealers will look at your credit and try to use it against you to make their deal. We all know how important our credit is in today’s world, but many if not most of us; don’t really understand what is contained in our credit file. We are going to take a short look to better understand what our file contains. 636

There are several different types of credit accounts reported to your credit file. The first is installment accounts. These types of accounts are those that have a set monthly payment amount and predetermined term of the loan such as your car payment or mortgage payment. They are designated with an I rating in your file. The second is a revolving account. These accounts are those such as credit cards that you only pay a minimum payment on the amount you charged to them. (It is strongly recommended that you pay more than the minimum payment on these accounts, though. We will go into that later). These are designated with an R rating in your file. The third
